Last year I bought a '97 F250 4X4 SCLB PSD for $500. It had been sitting in a field for several years, but a good set of batteries and it fired right up. Its a rough old work truck with 241K showing on the odometer.
After dragging it home and cleaning it up a little, this is what closer inspection found:
Needs new ball joints, u-joints and leaf springs in the D50 TTB.
The new AE scanner that I bought tells me it needs 3 injectors.
The glow plugs are all good, but the GPR is not.
Shift handle is broken, just the part with OD switch and light.
Body is pretty rough, but no rust to be found.
The interior is in need of a serious cleaning, but for the mileage is in good shape.
Well, being a self-employed mechanic, life and work got in the way. A home remodel that I have been working on for 3 years takes most of my spare $$$. A few weeks ago I lucked up on a non-running '97 F350 CCLB PSD for $200. Just another rough old work truck, but many good parts. Lucked out and got it running without putting any money into it.
Plans for the F250 include:
Swap in set of injectors from the F350 (that happened this past weekend, runs great)
Installed shifter from another OBS I have, trans now shifts correctly.
Knock out a few dents, mostly in the bedsides.
New tires, those were ordered today. :-)
New windshield, or rather the one from the other OBS parts truck.
Sometime this winter I plan to convert it to DRW using the rear end and bed from the F350, just gotta get those front hub adapters.
Far reaching plans include a D60 SAS, not sure when that one will come about unless another truck falls into my lap, cheap.
I'll try to keep up with what I get done and how much I spend, but I want to piece this truck together as cheaply as possible. It'll never be a beauty queen, but hopefully dependable.

Restoring, probably not. I have a 53 F100 that I have been driving for 7 years as a daily, its time for it to go back into the rebuild stage. Pretty much got it driving and not much more, although I have put between 85-90K on it.

Its by no means stock. Mercedes turbo diesel, auto, Lincoln Town Car front frame clip, 8.8 under the rear on Ranger springs and this is just the mechanicals. :-)
Probably 40K of those miles were pulling a teardrop camper after my first wife passed away. 15,626 miles in one trip, all the way to the Arctic Circle in AK.
The drw 4x4 factory hubs are a little harder to find.

Are these the adapters for the front hubs or the whole hub?
As for the low dollar trucks, they are pretty well used up when I "luck" up on them. I've got my eye on a 01 F350 CC PSD with a tool bed with over 340K on it that was run hot and seems to have no compression. I can probably pick it up for $750 or so.
I got that driver door handle installed Jeff. Sooo much better now, lol.
I still need to do the pass side in the other truck.
I need (want) to find an OBS CC 4x4 with a blown engine or something. My 96 front end is shot and the cab is rotting so fast. The bed looks like crap but is structurally sound. But other than a small fuel leak the engine runs like a top.

That's all I can think of at the moment, but I'm sure I've forgotten something, I've been tinkering with it on and off for a year.
Used windshield from my '94 F250 IDI installed today. Not many folks would attempt to cut out and install a "glue in" windshield, but there was an ulterior motive to this project. Now for a set of wiper blades and she's road ready.

Without this little jewel it would be impossible.
Well.... I tried to post a pic of a urethane cutout knife, a 18" long handle with a razor blade in the end. That windshield cutout tool laying on the hood in the first pic is a joke.
