2012 F-150 5.0 Coyote Knocking/Tapping
Hello all,
About 3 months ago, I bought a 2012 F-150 XLT 5.0 4x4. I bought it from a private party, a.k.a. without a warranty. It's a Ford, right? What could possibly go wrong??
Shortly after I bought it, I started noticing that it was knocking and tapping when it got up to operating temperature. Also, the idle isn't very smooth.
I have read through several threads here regarding Coyote engines with similar symptoms, and I have come to the realization that my wallet may be about to go on a diet.
Here is a video I made today, moving my phone to various places in the engine compartment, behind the drivers front wheel, and under the truck. Please take a listen and let me know what you think.
I realize that it could run a long time like this, but I sometimes take long trips and I really don't want to end up with engine trouble in the middle of nowhere.
Considering I don't have a warranty, and assuming the problem is out-of-round cylinders and/or worn valve train parts, what is my best course of action?
How much is a long-block from Ford? Is Ford the best/only place to get them?
I've seen some low-miles used 2013 Coyotes on eBay for around $3,000... Hopefully they had some of these issues ironed out by then!...?
Thanks --John

CuNmUdF250,
Thanks for replying. I found the thread you mentioned. Your suggestion sounds like the most graceful way out of this in my situation!
I'm not too keen on haggling with dealerships, but if that's what it takes to end up with a decent warranty, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet.
Thanks again,

Oh my, I recognized that sound instantly. I started a thread a few years ago about that exact noise and it took off, Im sure youve seen it. The truck that started that thread was replaced shortly after the block replacement with a 2014 5.0. The issue was supposedly fixed by 2014 right? Right. That truck started making that exact noise too. Not sure if it was a block issue, I didnt wait around. Unfortunately Ford didnt have anything for me this time (still not buying into the ecoboost jazz and not chancing a 3rd 5.0), so I dont currently own a Ford vehicle. I hope to see a different V-8 in the future so I can get back into an F-150 though. CuNmUDF250 has the best suggestion so far.
