Rams Horns and Porters or ?

Got a hold of a pair of rams horn manifolds a while back (for the 64 2WD with 292) what I'm thinking of going with for now is a "true" dual exhaust - no X or H pipe. Not sure on Porters or Smithy or something else. Probably not glasspacks? Maybe.

Right now the current stock setup is too loud, if anything, current single exhaust terminates before reaching the back wheels. I'm figuring on the new system will exit the rear of the truck? This may help quite a bit with perceived loudness.

Definitely want to be able to hear the Y-block niceness, BUT, also be able to hold a conversation in the cab, no droning, etc. Loud pipes don't cut it on long trips either.
Ideas?

Also plan on having someone else install manifolds and tube bending. There is a older-school independent shop that can do it, or should I call some of the exhaust places in town?

Okay, thanks Matt. Is there a part # that would be recommended?

I'm thinkin' if I show up with the manifolds and mufflers, whoever does the install can some up with the rest of the pipe and hardware locally. Thought about installing the manifolds to save some money but not sure if it's worth the hassle.

Okay. I see that the Porters are offered in 1.75" to 3" size. Seems to me 2" or 2.25" is considered the right diameter pipe for the particular Y block I have. Will talk to a local shop tomorrow and see what they say. Maybe they'll even stock these local somewhere but I doubt it.

OK so I talked to a shop today about this. Looks to me like these Rams Horns have a 2" flange outlet. I can order 2" diameter Porter mufflers no problem - but it looks like 2" pipe is, if not hard to find it isn't really a common size, looks like 2 and 1/4" or 2 and 1/2" is. What I would really like to find is a dual exhaust kit in 2" size? No such animal.

The next best thing is having all the parts on hand - the pipes and clamps hangers and such. A few web searches and my eyes start to glaze over. I see Summit has 7' lengths of 2" pipe, that's about it. Any advice on how to proceed?

I've got custom made headers on my y-block. The headers go to a 3" collector running 3" pipe into Flowmasters 50 series (If I remember right)
The Flowmasters are 3" in and 3" out they run out the back through custom tips.
No "H" no nothing just straight from headers all the way out the back.
I like the sound, If 3" is overkill, so be it, it's been that way for several years without a problem.

Right, your engine is probably a little more "warmed over" than mine, shall we say? 2" pipes should be enough, this engine is stock as they come but it should breath a lot better and sound nice. Like I said it's too loud as it is now. What I need is a "dual exhaust kit" in 2" diameter, though naturally having a 64 this doesn't exist.

If I drop the truck off with just the 2" Porter mufflers and the Rams Horns and let them deal with the rest, might take a while.

Haven't talked to a dedicated muffler shop but I think they would end up costing quite a bit more. Might be quicker though, they could probably bend up what they need on the spot.

Not really sure whose Rams Horns these are. I don't think they are Mummert's though. The ID of the outlet is actually a shade over 2", maybe 2 and 1/8" maybe. I suppose it wouldn't be the end of the world to weld some kind adapter on and get around the size differential that way. Is 2" pipe stock or OEM or something? I'm just a simple guy trying to do a simple job. If I get all the parts I'd do it myself, but I dunno.

2" is as big as you can go with ramshorns and still be able to get a nut on to tighten the flange.

You will also need to provide flanges for the pipes as the bolt spacing is different than newer vehicles and it is not very likely that a muffler shop will have them or even know where to get them.

Hm, didn't think of that Charlie. Why does everything require jumping through hoops with this.

Porters sells 2" clamps, I figured on buying four of those, I honestly didn't think any more clamps would be necessary.

If the pipes are bent or welded, then only clamps for installing the mufflers will be required for that part - unless you also have the mufflers welded.

The flanges I'm talking about are those that mount to the manifolds.

The manifolds came with flanges, manifold and flange gaskets, and hardware for the flanges. They weren't stored the best by somebody so there is light rust but I don't think it matters as they will get rusty anyway?

Ordered the Porter mufflers online and they shipped them out right away the next day. Super service. Nicely made, heavy. Made in U.S.A.

After discussing a few things with BigWinF100 (Kevin) am going to use a pair of heat shields made for rams horns he has been hoarding for me.

Got the manifolds installed, pipe, hangers, mufflers etc.

Sounds real nice, but isn't near as loud at idle or zipping around town as I thought it would be. That's good, I guess but a little louder would be OK too. Removed spare from under bed and ran pipes straight out back to bumper.

Do porter mufflers get louder over time?

This is from the Porter FAQ on their website.

Q: I just installed a pair of Porter Mufflers but my exhaust is pretty quiet and making a puffing sound, is that going to change?

A: Being a hand-made product there will always be a little variation in the packing of the insulation. Sometimes our mufflers get a little over-packed and the “puffing” sound is from the insulation pushing against the core spring, not allowing it to redirect the sound waves. This will go away with about 1,000-1,500 miles worth of use as sound pressure compresses the insulation against the outer casing and you will get the full Porter Muffler sound effects!

Most packed muffler will "break in" over time and use and sound levels may increase. I am running dual Thrush glass packs on mine and like the sound as well. Not too loud with a nice rumble.
