Eaton trans swap

I have a 97 f350 cclb drw. I have found a place where I can but a 5 or 6 speed Eaton transmissions for the cheap with off of t444e's with flywheel, crossmember, bell housing or adaptor whatever its called on them and clutch assembly. My question is has anyone done this swap in a powerstroke and what had to be done to make it work? I wouldn't think it would be too hard since they are off a 7.3 and are pretty small transmissions. Can anyone give me some info on this please? thanks.

Haven't had the experience of swapping to a medium duty trans in an OBS, but in earlier models there is usually clearance issues with the floorboard. If you want to do the sheet metal work to make it fit, then should be a pretty sweet swap.

The two Eaton trans that I looked at were a 5 and a 6 speen and they looked like they would hang down lower than the factory but not stick up higher. They to me looked smaller than the factory e4od that is in my truck top to bottom I think if the Eaton was bigger in would be from sid to side but, I haven't measured either one to be sure I'm just going off what I've seen camparing the two length width and height then again I can be wrong that's why I'm on here asking if its been done and what was involved in doing it.

Getting the huge SAE bellhousing to fit is going to require firewall mods, and if you are 5x4 you will need to go to a divorced transfer case; but, the biggest issue is most of those medium duty transmissions are 1:1 final, not overdrive.

I looked up the sae 2 bell housing ad its saying that it's 18.375" 12 bolt bell housing. Does anyone know the dimensions of the e4od bell housing?

We are talking about the round bell housing on the Eaton trans is what bolts directly to the engine? Or does it bolt to something else in between the engine and the trans bell housing? I have no experience in medium duty transmissions so I don't know. I was assuming that the round bell housing on the transmissions I looked at bolted directly to the engine and if that is the case the eatons I liked at dident look like those bell housings would be that big of a deal to fit in the factory trans hump. Surely there's someone on here that's done this or at least tried it there's too much interest in it for it not no have been done or tried.

This is an interesting alternative to a ZF5 swap. I'm interested to see what comes up!

I've seen a few threads with the questions but no real definitive answers. Good luck. I'd really check the size though.

After reading this thread....I did an internet search....

there is a thread on another oil forum (hint) that is pretty detailed....didn't have time to read it all though.

I have had to deal with this on my cummins swap on my other truck. The eaton trannys use an SAE 1 and SAE 2 flywheel housing. The SAE 2 flywheel housing does not taper and will absolutely require firewall and tunnel modification. Assisting would be to add a body lift but I am not a fan of them nor do I want to do one. I can send a pic of an SAE #2 if you want. I took it off my cummins out of a blue bird bus.

If you do end up going with a medium duty trans, the tranny "to have" is the FSO8209A. Its around 340lbs and is a 9 speed vs the 6 speeds and is only 2 inches longer. It's a synchro 9 spd, 9th = 0.75, 1st = 9.45, steps about 1.37 to 1.40, It works with SAE#1 or #2.

All eaton 6 spds use a SAE #2.

Are you a 4wd? Have you thought about t case yet?

Non synchro trannys will suck! Period!

Here is a thread explaining the 6 speeds if you want to go that route....
