I asked a while back if anyone had done it, no one had. So I did mine, and then another one. I got pics on the second one though.

I basically cut just the top out to keep and use. Only for the fan wiring so I didn't have to lengthen it at all.

Doing the belts underneath is now a breeze, can be done in 10 minutes without moving anything out of the way.

Also, this can be done with out removal of the stator. First one I did I cut with a sawzall on both sides of the top, then on bottom in the middle. Pulled both halves right out.

 

What does the stator do?

 

It's designed to rotate air around to quiet the flow of air. It's also said it helps move the air around to cool. However, I've seen no ill effects or higher temps at all.
