Blown turbos... who has had one

Hey fellas,

I partake on the 7.3 boards but wanted to run over here and ask you about your 6.7s and the longevity on the turbos. We have had a ton of guys loosing turbos on their 14 and newer rigs. Most tow heavy and bought the truck purposely for work. I was curious if this was what you guys were seeing at all if you use the truck for hauling often rather than DD???

When I say going prematurely they are going ever 30-40k miles. They have all been covered under warranty, but there are a few that are on their second and third turbo. I have a half dozen ranchers trucks that lost them before 50k. Predominantly they are 450/550s

I thought I would come over here and ask and see what you guys have seen with your rigs.

Not trying to poke or irritate at all. I was just curious.

Thank you.

Good to know. I was curious. These trucks are not deleted, just left alone. I was surprised to see so many going and 30-45k seems to be the magic number for their first turbo , but there are a few oddballs that can almost cut it in half. But they are strictly for hauling.

Just curious if you are to pay out of pocket, what does a dealership charge? for anyone that may have gone down that route?

Anybody gone with a bigger charger?

You can replace them yourself if you know how.

Really don't see a lot of the stock truck turbos going bad.

Some of the 11/12 model years made a bunch of noise then they did a redesign.

I was going to do the work myself but most of the cost was parts. Seals gaskets oil change turbo etc. it was only $600 and change for labor.

I figure for $600-700 labor they can do it. Only took half day and they stand behind the work.

The bulk of the turbo failures came from the single turbine turbo used in the CC 450/550 trucks. The turbo's in the '11-'14 are prone to failures if tuners are added, but even stock trucks have had failures. I'm not aware of any improvements to the turbo's from '11-'14 years, although the failures have seam to have dropped off.

The '15 turbo's is where the design change was made and these should be as bullet proof as they get.

Yeah for $600 I wouldn't even mess with it.

I remember that from a while back. I knew the 450/550 were different, and a few tuners were developing their data off the single turbine, and then loading tune base files to the 350 down rigs causing quite a bit of issue. I am not sure how much of that is truth, but either way I was just getting a feel of what it costs to replace them since I get asked weekly now.

I won't work on the newer trucks, but I have a lot of friends/farmers/coworkers that are going through turbos like crazy and I just wanted to ask. I am not used to seeing it, let alone on the newer trucks.

Is it an oiling issue or overspool issue? Why not run a little bit bigger charger?
