I have a new set of tires ready to go on, BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 to replace my miserable MTs. Anyway, I've been pondering the idea of having the stock wheels powder coated satin black. I know I could have bough new rims but didn't like anything I found. I also like the idea of the stock rims for the strength as opposed to some of the aftermarket rims. I have attached some doctored photos to simulate the look, any opinions?
Thanks,
Steve
Wow, that's a better look than I would have thought! I like the police interceptor look with the chrome center caps- but maybe dark out some of the flutes on the sides?
Anyway I think with the truck black it's a good look!
I like it, like you I haven't found anything I really like.... Can I ask ball park what's it going to cost?
It can vary quite a bit. One place quoted $200 per rim, he said they do chemical stripping, not blasting. No way would I pay that! The other 2 places I called quoted about $75 per wheel which I think is reasonable. You do have to make sure they do good work and don't mess-up the wheels however. Like anything, there are hacks out there. My rims are actually in near new condition but just want to mix it up and I like the look. The police interceptor look is what I was going for. I'll make a decision on the caps once the wheels are done. My plates vanity plates that are the Police Memorial edition.
The pain is pulling the wheels, (last time I tried they were frozen on), taking them to a shop to have the tires removed, driving 45 minutes to the powder coater, going back to pick them up then taking them to get the new tires mounted. Anyway, I'll post some pics when it's all said and done.
You could try out a pretty close version of that black powdercoat effect by using some black plastidip spray on your rims. If you don't like it, you can peel the stuff right back off. They have other colors you can special order too, but the Home Depot close to me sells the brandname and another version in the paint department. If you google it, there are a bunch of videos of how to get the best results. There are guys doing whole cars in the stuff. Seems a good way to protect nice rims from winter weather and/or off roading too.
I Cerakoted mine. I've used it guns and knives for years, so I know it's way more durable. If I had to choose between plastic dip and powercoating, it'd would be powercoating. I really need to take some krylon to those weights.
I think I'm set on the black, I've read about guys using the Plastidip however. This is a pic with an approximation with my new tires.
Plastidip would be the least cost effective way and easiest to remove if you change your mind. My future SIL does everything from wheels to entire cars with that stuff. I just had him do my grill last week and it looks pretty good.

I was going to say, it looks like a Fed g-ride either way.
