VIN Research

New to the forum. I'm trying to find out as much about my truck as I can. I replaced the cab 10 years ago because the original cab was covered in rust. Where can I find a VIN number? The title I have from 1983 has a veh. id. number but when I enter it into a Ford VIN decoder it doesn't work. Any help is appreciated.

While looking around and searching on this forum I learned that the glove box lid has an id placard screwed to it. I know that makes me sound like an idiot but you have to understand that my truck was torn apart 20 years ago when I was 13 years old and the interior pieces have been in a box. I ran out to the shed and dug through all the pieces and found my glove box lid AND THERE IT WAS. I entered the number into vinmagic.com and this is what it said:

1951 Ford F-1 Conventional
Series: F-1 Conventional
Engine Code: I6 226 CID
Production Year: 1951
Assembly Plant: Richmond, CA
Production Sequence: *****

My dad has always told me this truck was a 1952 F1. The title I have from 1983 says model year 52. I guess my dad was wrong and it's a 1951?

Does the vin on your glovebox door match the title? If not you might want to check the number stamped on the frame. Should be on the passenger side near the radiator.

The VIN on the glove box does not match the veh id on the title I have from 1983. I will check the frame this morning. Thanks!

I went through the same thing with my 51 F1. The Serial number stamped on the frame contains limited information, as does the glovebox tag. Some trucks have the detailed code stamped on the firewall near the top center-mine does not. Yours may or may not have it; don't be surprised if it doesn't.

If the detail code is not on the firewall, you, like me, are SOL.

Since he posted that the cab was changed, the stamping, if there won't matter.

If your glove box tag was attached to the replacement cab, there's a good chance that it belongs to the replacement cab, not your truck. That would explain why the numbers on the tag don't match your title or frame numbers.

The hood is a 1951. Also, the Richmond plant was in California, not Virginia.

The glove box lid is from the original cab. Before I junked the original cab I removed everything I could including the glove box lid. I don't remember if I removed the patent plate that is supposed to be mounted on the firewall as I understand.

The state was an oversight on my part. Thanks!

It's still there today, restored by the city of Richmond for mixed usage.
