What Truck do I need?

Ok, here goes again.

Just courious on what truck everyone thinks I should get to pull a Travel Trailer with a dry weight of 7300lbs? It is a 35ft (bumper to ball). Let's just say I put an additional 1500lbs of cargo (which I don't think I ever will), that would bring the weight up to 8800lbs.

What Truck would pull it with no problems IF I decide to pull it to the mountains etc??

Thanks in advance

Tony

You could do it with a 150, but I would go 250 so you can handle it better in the mountains.

In my reserch, I found that a F250 has more tow capacity than a F350. Not sure why but that is what the specs show.

The 250 and 350, if ordered in the same configuration and with the same options, will be 100% identical physically. The 250 is just de-rated on paper to fill a different market segment. That said, with the trailer in question, either a 150 or 250 would be a good fit.

Tony, I have a F150, 5.4 and pull a small 21' TT and I'm looking at a super duty. The F150 pulls it ok if you like to let the engine rev. Pulling at a high altitude with a head wind Requires the engine to run at high RPMs. Just returned from a 6,600 mile trip to Yellowstone and beyond. Both exhaust manifolds cracked. They were white from the high temps. It's not just the weight your pulling. It's also the flat surface your dragging through the wind. Yes a 150 will do it. But.

That's a personal choice Tony. I like my short bed for daily driving/parking. It all depends how you will use the truck when you're not towing. They will both tow very similarly...

Short wheelbase is handy in parking lots.

Long bed is always nice, you may not use it often, but the few times you do you will be very thankful!

A f150 with the max tow and the 3.5 ecoboost would pull that trailer very well. Your rpms won't be that high either.

But if you think you may go higher then just go ahead and get the F250 at least.

What he said- regarding the F150 and Ecoboost. With the new motors and Trans an Ecoboost would handle that fine. I pull a 30 foot TT about a thousand pounds less with 2011 F150 4x4 5.0L. If I was pulling anything bigger Id probably opt for the turbo 3.5 and a max tow just for the mirrors and rear end (3.71 vs 3.55). The only way I would go bigger is if I really planned to travel the USA and spend more time pulling than not. once unhooked the F150 will see significant gas mileage and ride comfort over F250 or 350 trucks. diesel excluded. my 5.0 sees 19-22 on highway without towning and 10-11.5 towing (highway speeds 65 -70 mph). Just make sure you have weight distribution hitch in any event.
just my opinion.

Long Bed...I went from a long bed to the short bed. I really miss the long bed. The short bed does everything fine, it's just that I liked the long bed best.

My take on the question at hand......if you are going to do a little towing and just once in a while in the mountains.....F150

If you are going to do a lot of towing, mountains, hills, plains, or whereever.......F250 or F350! If nothing else, just for the 6R140 transmission!!!
This tranny will win hands down over the 6R80 transmission in the half ton!!
One thing to remember, especially across the great plains, there may not be big hills, but there will be some pretty good cross winds at times!!!

The engines in the half tons have pretty good power, but long days of hot weather will take its toll on the lighter duty transmission.
