Question about the f650s

Hello,
Im new to the group. Im hoping I can get some info on a F650 im looking at. I am looking at getting a 1972 330cu gas f650. From what I understand it was originally a f600 and converted it to a f650. Im waiting to get all the info on it yet but anyone know what to watch for on them? Like I said Im not sure if I will get much help with how old it is but any info would help!
Thanks in advance!

Not sure what they mean by converted to F650. I'd investigate that to make sure it wasn't hacked up. Get me all the codes off the door's warranty plate. i'll give you what info I can on how it was originally built.

No such thing as an F650 for trucks of this vintage. If the MODEL code stamped on the Warranty Plate is F650, this is a 1972 F600 4WD with a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 16,000 lbs.

Besides MODEL code F650, there are MODEL codes of F651, F652, F653, F654. All are F600 4WD's with various GVWR's.

Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch.

All 500 and larger series trucks were only sold as a Cab & Chassis (no "back of cab equipment"). The back of cab equipment was installed by aftermarket body makers.

There is no such thing as an F650 prior to the 1990's.

Looking at the pic, this truck has a 1967/72 F100/350 pickup bed mounted to it. There were no pickup beds available for 500 and larger series trucks.

What the 'dual rear wheel' fenders are from that are attached to the bedsides, I haven't a clue, this is not something that FoMoCo did.

The only Styleside pickups with DRW's were introduced in 1980 F350's.

So do you think theres something sketchy going on with it where I should lean away or do you think its legit? I think it looks like a sharp truck none the less. But for the motor im actually thinking about upgrading it some more.

Also what are the chances of it being 4wd? Sorry for all the questions Ive never looked at anything this big before so its all new to me. Im just looking to get some other opinions on it before driving all the way up and look at it. I appriciate all the help

It's not 4x4. Those front wheels are actually hubs like mobile home wheels, the clamps on the outer end of the spokes hold on the rim that the tire is mounted to, and in the very center is the bearing. The visible bolts in between the spokes just hold the drums on, there is no way to drive it.
The bed mounting is actually pretty horrific, what with the plates welded to the frame and all. Those rear springs are going to give a back breaking ride even with two tons in the bed, if the supports will handle that kind of weight.
There are much better ways to recreate that truck.

Those rear fenders look somewhat like Chevy Apache stepside pieces.

My plan is if I can get it for a good price. I was planning on engine swapping it to a diesel. Either a cat, international, or a cummins. Then doing a front axle swap for possibly 4x4. I would like to put a 5th wheel in the back. I wanna use it for a side job just to pull boats in and out of the water and deliver them to the destination. Do you think this truck has the potential or shouldnI pass? Or if its a good canidate. Whats a reasonable price for it?

I think thats a very cool custom truck, I'm actually planning to do one like that myself here in the next couple of years. He took an F600 and added a pickup bed, I have seen a couple others done like that. I would love to be able to find an F600 crew cab to build up this way but I am not going to hold my breath!

I think it would be a badass truck when I got done with it but from what it sounds like is it needs a new bed mounting brackets made up. Its by far the best canidate around me but I dont want to regret anything by just jumping straight in with my eyes shut. I might pass on this one and look for a newer one. Except id be paying a hell of a lot more or Id have to build a box mounting system for one anyways.

In a perfect world I'd be able to find a crew cab with a dump bed, and then I'd remove the sides of the dump and figure a way to install pickup bed sides to the dump floor. That way it would be a pickup but it would still be able to tilt the bed back. And that would be a pretty tough secure bed floor.

What kind of box would you use to put on a flatbed or dump truck bed?
