How reliable are the 6.4's

Hi all. I'm usually on the 7.3 forum, but my sister is looking at a '08 6.4 with 108k. Just wondering if there is anything to look out for, or mods that need done before things break. I don't know if it has the DPF or EGR deletes, I am going to look at it with her this week.
How hard are they to work on, I do everything on my 7.3's and will probably be working on whatever she gets, as her husband isn't much of a mechanic.
Thanks guys..

I can only offer that mine just hit 100k. All stock 2008

I do the 5000 mile oil and filter changes. 10k fuel filter changes and the truck runs flawlessly. People have had some Rocker arm issues but I think that is small in number overall.

I love my truck and hope it goes another 100k. I haven't had to wrench on it but I hear it is a pain. There are some good experts in here that can provide specifics.

I agree they are pretty reliable.

They do benefit mostly from a DPF delete. The EGR can go or stay IMO. Tuned it is unused anyways. Oil changes and fuel filter changes are very important, also draining the filter or water.

Working on the chassis is no different than what you have now. The engine isn't to bad for the valve covers. After that it becomes cab off. You can pull turbos cab on, but it can suck.

Look under the hood to see if the cooling system upgrades have been done. These include updated: radiator hoses, venturi T, thermostats, degas bottle and EGR valve. The original design radiator hoses leaked and were replaced by ones that are constructed with some white plastic at the ends and double o-rings. Google and you'll find pics. If you don't see the updated hoses then I would suggest that you plan on flushing the cooling system and updating necessary parts. Just search the forums and you'll find pics of everything I've mentioned. My experience is that trucks have some of the above parts swapped out, depending on who did the work. Mine has new thermostats and hoses but original radiator, EGR valve and degas bottle.

And ... friends don't let friends buy a diesel without maintenance records.

And at 100k miles I'd expect to see records of: cooling system flush, tranny flush and filter, differential fluid change, brake fluid flush, serpentine and accessory belt change, air filter change, hopefully suspension work like tie rods and shocks.

I'm about to hit 100,000 miles and truck runs fantastic. Only real issue is break caliper didn't fully release a couple times due to trash in the lines. Had a couple small issues all fixed under warranty and the last 60k has been flawless. Great truck!

Make sure to keep a eye on coolant, follow service schedule and change your oil every 5k.

I'm coming up on 88,500 on a 2010. Daily driver work truck in emergency management. Factory stock except for emergency lights/siren/radios/laptops/etc.

Used for responses, some extended idling on scene, pull 28 foot mobile dispatch rig, 12,000 mobile cat backup generator sometimes.

Only 2 issues & 1 annoyance.
#1 airbag off light and switch quit and was warranty replaced.

#2.....i suffered the Ford Death Wobble for what felt like forever before I found a Ford shop that heard of it and finally fixed it.

Annoyance...when the air is disturbed just enough and speed is 70+ the windshield outter plastic seal vibrated and made a kazoo horn sound. Very loud and vibration could be felt in old man handle on the A post. But resolved by semi trailer tire blowing apart and hitting me at around mach 80 and busting the windshield. New one installed with no issues.

Overall...very happy 'Stroker!!!

I bought my 2008 F-350 with 122,000 miles. It was single owner with only two warranty claims both were recalls. I have since put 7500 miles and only trouble was an alternator failure, rear pinion seal on axle, and a leaking radiator when it was below zero.

I did a DPF and EGE delete as I was tired of regen's and the trouble those parts can cause.

I tow a 28 foot bumper tow camp trailer and it performs flawlessly. I have zero regrets with my purchase and love my 6.4.

106,000 miles on mine, deleted and tuned, runs and drives flawlessly. I'm the second owner, no repairs since I've owned it and according to the oasis reports a recall and a passenger door speaker for the first owner, still has the original brake pads.

I purchased mine in May, 2010 with 31,000 miles on it. I've done 5k mile oil changes and 10k mile fuel filter changes, and always let the regens finished. Replaced the 2nd set of brake pads this year and both rear calipers, still on original rotors. Both thermostats, upper radiator hose at 88K, both belts, belt tensioners, and ball joints at 89k.

Deleted the DPF/DOC, EGR and 4" exhaust from the downpipe back at 88k back in April, 2015. I now have 98k miles on the truck. I tow a 12k fifth wheel during the spring/summer months averaging about 2k miles/yr of tow miles. My fuel economy averaged anywhere from 15/16mpg unloaded and 7 to 10mpg towing the 5'ver. After the deletes, my mpg went to 16/17mpg unloaded. Towing mpg's stayed the same. The only repairs I had to do was the EGR valve at 86k just before I deleted the EGR (what a waste, I wasn't thinking when I had the EGR valve replaced). I'm planning to replace the stock intake with an S&B soon.

I like my truck, it has been dependable and hasn't let me down. I just wish it was a 4wd Lariat, but I couldn't justify the extra expense at the time. It does what I need it to do which is pull my RV and daily commuting.

must use mototcraft supplies when you do the services

check for water in the primary regularly if you are in cold climates

I wouldnt run it with less than 1/4 tank of gas....nor fuel it up after a station gets a fuel delivery.

watch your oil level...it will increase with time as fuel contamination occurs.

ford says the ticking is normal...meanwhile there have been instances of lifter and rocker failures.

exhaust manifolds are thin tubing and have been known to blow thru....good thin the 6.0 exhaust manifolds are cast and are a direct fit.
