6.4 Test Drive Questions
Looking at a 2008 F-250 XLT Crewcab, 6.4 PSD with only 56,000 miles. Also has leveling kit and 35's. It's been sitting at a Dealership for months so I'm leary she might have issues. I have a good quality Scanner and Torque app/ELM thingy.
What are some variables to look for? I looked in the 6.4 section and to be honest it's rather dead. Which seems kinda a good thing considering how active the 6.0 section is.
So yeah, I'm looking at getting back into the SD game and this truck is a very good candidate. I learned a lot from my old 6.0 and the Excursion. Mainly just worried about the motor
TIA

Hi Tylus,
The 6.4L trucks tend to be a little more reliable than the 6.0L ones were, but they are also more expensive to fix. The cab typically gets removed to remove the turbos as well as the HPFP. A bad tank of fuel can set you back $10,000, as the high pressure fuel pump sends shrapnel through the system and kills all 8 injectors.
It's not uncommon to hear of a P0088 code which typically indicates a failed VCV or PCV, which in both cases requires a new HPFP.
Most are good trucks, but they are very expensive to fix when they break. I'd agree with Stroken-A, look for a later model year.

do not take off emission stuff because it will create a nightmare which is expensive,i know to many people that done this and it was a disaster! one guy i know said he got horrible mpg so he went to take off all the stuff, when he did he had nothing but issues till he got rid of truck and got a 6.2 gas. my 6.4 when it does a regen it never drops mpg or is a power issue, i drive normal and do not drive 80mph, if i drove at that speed with a 430 gear set of course i would get less than 10mpg, if i drive under 70 mph i get 15-16 empty
driving normal, if i pull my 33 ft camper and i drive 65 i avg 10-12 depending on where i am at, i can say this the 6.4 is a beast for towing, it is not as peppy as a 6.0 or 6.7 but i have out pulled several 6.7 up mtns which they thought my truck has a spartan tune which it does not. remember the 6.4 is the maxx force 7 engine international uses in commercial applications except in pickup they have 50 more hp!
i like a 6.7, i am looking to trade one of my f250s in on a new 6.7 250,but a 6.4 will be hard to beat
