aussie 1990 5.8 question

hi all,
has anyone removed the factory dizzy and replaced it with an earlier type with vac advance and modified curve, without removing the rest of the electronics/EEC4 box?
this motor spends most of it's time running on LP gas and when we checked the timing on this engine and a few others, it was noticed that the timing retards straight away when revs increase and only climb when u back the throttle off quickly. IMPCO use to offer a modified ECU back in the day and i can't help but wander if the timing was what they changed
any idea's?
