2011 6.7L getting DTC P0401

Getting DTC P0401 on my 2011 with 92K miles. First time I got the CEL, we were on vacation, so I read the code, took a screen shot, then cleared it. Called my normal dealer, setup an appt, verified that they thought the truck was safe to drive. Coming home from vacation, I was pulling the TT in my sig, and noticed significant loss of power on hills that I have pulled many times before that I couldnt even hold 55 on now. Transmission dropped into 4th a couple times, on hills that it would sometimes stay in 6th, or at most drop to 5th.

CEL stayed off for a week , and came back on again. The funny thing is that after a day or 2, the CEL went back out on its own. I read the codes the P0401 is still there as a stored code(I did not clear this time). Around town the truck drives fine, the only thing I noticed was the decrease in power when towing.

Truck is at the dealer now. TECH "isn't convinced" yet that there is a problem. He is not finished diagnosing yet, and I am sure that he has specific tests to run, but I am starting to fear that I will be getting the call to come get my truck.

I am going to drop Crystal a note to see if she can help at all.

Dave
I'll keep my eyes peeled for the message, Dave. When writing, be sure to include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealer.

Obviously I am not there to look at and the tech has to do their thing with diagnoses.

That code is EGR insufficient flow and I could see that causing your issue. While I could be wrong, I bet your EGR valve gets replaced or cleaned out...

Agreed on the fact that they need to do theirs tests. Anything other than calling me to tell me they found no trouble I will be happy.

I guess I have a bad taste in my mouth from last summer. I got a different CEL (P249F) brought it in, the TECH(could be the same person thats working on my truck now), ran his diags on EGT sensors, and specifically EGT12, and simply turned off the CEL, and they had me pick up the truck. Said it was within tolerances. Didnt matter that the truck wouldnt go into regen, mileage was down 5MPG. I bought my own EGT replacement sensor, put it in, and that fixed the problem myself. That was a $35 fix, and honestly didnt mind fixing it myself because it saved me the hassle of having to drop the truck off, wait a day or two, etc.

EGR issues on the other hand are a lot more expensive, and not something I am capable of fixing myself.

In my mind, if there is a CEL (and the same DTC code) multiple times, then the trucks brains are saying *something* needs to be fixed. I won't tolerate a CEL coming and going at will. If they dont fix it now, hopefully it will get "worse" in the next 7500 miles before I reach 100K miles. If not, it might be time to trade it in.

Dealer called me late yesterday afternoon and told me that they will be replacing the cooler covered under warranty.

As for idleing? I dont think I do. There are about 2000 hours on the truck, and 200 idle hours. 10%, I'm assuming that also includes stopped in traffic time as well.
