Starter with or without attached Solenoid?
#16
I bought one without the Solenoid and it fit perfect and she roared back to life! Thanks so much for all your help with this guys. Tomorrow I'll take the carburetor off to see if the intake and carburetor are square bore or spread bore so I can find a suitable replacement for the EGR Plate. I have a hole in it and I don't have to get it emissions tested here in MD, since it's an historic truck.

If its a 77 intake then it is spread bore. If it is post back here and I will give you the number for the adapter plate. I had to go thru this with my 77.

If it has a square bore on it then it must have the adapter already on it. But you say the exhaust port in the manifold is open? If it is they didn’t use the right adapter and that engine must be noisy plus hot. I used the transadapt 2199 and put the Edelbrock 8723 spacer under the carb to keep it from getting hot. I don’t know how hot it gets where you are but it gets hot here and anytime you get stopped in traffic the engine starts heating up and the carb heats up from the hot intake then the gas starts percolating in the carb and it runs rough. The fiber spacer keeps the carb cool and I would suggest using it.

I meant that I think the carburetor is a square bore. I have not yet taken it off (I'll probably do that tonight), but I looked up the number on the carb and it's a Holley 4160. When I looked at pictures of that model online I saw it was a square bore. If you;re saying the stock manifold on a 460 auto is a spread bore, than I assume that's what I will see tonight. So I'll likely need a plate to replace the EGR plate that fits between the square bore carb and spread bore manifold. (if you can't tell already, I am a novice. I bought this truck in order to learn to work on engines.)
No, the exhaust port isn't open, I meant that we actually have a rust hole in the EGR plate. On my trip driving the truck back from CA to MD, we discovered the rust hole in the part that sticks out from the plate (where the EGR valve is attached. That hole got bigger and bigger as we made out way east, causing a pretty significant vacuum leak. We stopped in Ohio and had a guy slap a piece of metal over it with a clamp and some hi-temp silicone, but the truck still stalled at stop signs.
My plan is to just remove the EGR plate and replace it with a spacer of some kind, since I don't have to get it emissions tested.
I created s separate post for that issue and Bill (NumberDummy) recommended this plate: D5TZ-9A589-C.
You said you replaced the plate on your 77. What plate did you end up using?

transadpt 2199
Here is pictures of my manifold and the transadapt. I don't know what was blowing out. Was it the EGR plate itself or the hot air that I am pointing to on the picture? If its the EGR plate than just order the transadapt and bolt it back together. Let me know if I can be of any help. Gary
