Rear differential leak from pinion seal, correct fluid for E-locker?

Hey Guys,

New issue this week - truck developed a leak from the pinion seal. I'm not sure how much has leaked out, so I would like to top it off before limping to the dealership.

From the manual: "Motorcraft SAE 75W-140 Rear Synthetic Axle Lubricant" There is also a footnote for friction modifier required for a Trans-Loc rear diff. Assuming that footnote refers to an LSD and NOT the E-Locker, should be able to top off with just the fluid, correct?

Thanks

Note/Rant: I am a die hard for Truck fan but am really disappointed with the overall quality of the truck. I bought it new and now with 30k, I've had it in twice to have rotors turned, once for transmission getting stuck in 5th and needed a new molded leadframe assembly, and now the pinion leak. All fixed under warranty, however really unacceptable for a truck with this low of miles and an easy life.

I'm not sure which fluid it takes but my e-locker has 40K on it without any leaks...even after my 3K mile towing the '67 F100.

Update - Have an appointment scheduled for Monday morning for the pinion seal. Picking up a quart of fluid to top it off before limping it over. Will give another update once resolved.

Quick update:
Had a vacation day yesterday and had an 8am apointment scheduled at Tasca Ford of Berlin Ct. By 11am, they still had not even begun to look at my truck, so I asked for the keys and left. If I was a walk-in customer I can understand the wait, however I had a scheduled apointment. I called up ford of Branford Ct and they were able to get me checked in that afternoon. I decided to leave the truck vs. wait (as I lost most of my morning anyways). I got a call today and they are ordering parts and hopefully will be in the next day or so to finish up the repairs. They are also going to be addressing a "clicking" sound that occurs when shifting from park to drive

It sounds like you're in good hands at the new dealership, Robb. Tell us how the repair progresses. I'm always just a PM away if you need my help.

Wow, that's frustrating Robb! Downright unusual for a pinion seal to fail like that.

Update: Truck back

Hi folks,

Hope that everyone enjoyed the Holiday weekend. I got my truck back on Friday morning. It was actually finished on Thursday, but did not have a ride down to pick it up. No leaks and all looks good for now. Below is invoice from the dealer:

Has anyone had the differential fill plug out? I pulled it to top it off before driving down and there seemed to be more material on the magnet than I expected. The deal claims it was the "clutch packs wearing in" though I'm calling BS because this isn't a LSD. Wish I took a picture when I pulled the plug. Wasn't worth arguing, wanted my truck back.

I also had them address the "click" when going into gear per TSB 14-0090. gDMJoe was nice enough to have it posted on his site, here is a link to those interested in that repair article: TSB 14-0090

I wouldn't worry about some metal shavings Robb. It's very common for a gearcase to shed some metal as it breaks in. The magnet should attract just about all the shavings in the gearcase, so it's not as if there will be more elsewhere to be found.

Presumably you cleaned it off, so I'd check back in another ten thousand miles if you're concerned.

Robb sorry to hear about your issues my friend, glad they got it resolved for you. I agree with Tom that you will have shavings eventually as the gears wear.

Thanks guys for the support and the reassurance on the metal shavings. I have never had a diff plug out and didn't expect to see that much on the magnet. Tom, I did clean it off before replacing. As you mentioned, I will probably check again in another 10k, just for my own peace of mind.
