For OEM? Have never seen one.

What's your MPG now?

hio silver--

my mileage was approximately 6 when i got the truck up and running from bone stock equivalent, frankenford field queen status.

i replaced the 4.10 gears with 2.78 gears and replaced the 29" standard diameter tires with 33" MTs. Then I got the engine overhauled which gave it a tuneup and eventually a new vacuum advance. this is with dana 60 on front, dana 70 on back (not the best choice for mileage, but rugged). detroit locker on rear.

this brought the gas mileage up to 8.6.

now it is in the shop with the engine in the process of being upgraded from a 360 to a (standard truck) 390 and the intake and carb from stock to edelbrock (intake: performer).

i am guessing that the transmission is a bw t-18 (i think it is correct).

it is a 4wd.

i am trying to improve long haul freeway mileage (i know, i know).

mikes_68_f100--

hey great graphs. it seems as if the engine peaks out at 1500-2000 rpm. i am wondering if the lower end of that range might be usable for overdrive freeway cruising. the chart makes that a tempting presumption (but am i reading it right?).

also i do not know what the manifold pressure might be useful for (but i am willing to learn, especially if it affects gas mileage).

general question-- how does the curve move (if at all) when considering the fe 390?

related question-- should i get a tachometer? if so, which one? one that i saw seemed to mount with a clamp directly over the steering column. i am positively inclined towards reliability, easy field repair, and ruggedness to match the rest of my truck.

thanks to all!

Why settle for the sunken piston 8.5 CR truck spec, when for the same price you can have 9.5ish CR with the piston much nearer the top of the deck--two things that improve power and economy?

both 360 & 390 were done with 2bl 350 cfm carbs and low 8.5:1 compression ratio
if you are having a 390 built , add in a RV cam and bump the CR to 9.5 - 10.
you will see alot more hp and tq .
TQ pulls you off the line HP drags you across the finish line , so more HP you have will keep you crusing at 60 mph but at a lower RPM so you should see better MPG

not trying to build a dragster, just a solid 4x4 with a nod towards cruising freeway cruising gas mileage or perhaps even more so vice versa. i have not addressed the transmission and transfer case yet.

9.5 390s were hardly dragsters in the day. The only reason to build an 8.5 is if you are going to tow max loads up big hills. That's way Ford (and everyone else) built their truck gassers with low compression.

You want torque and fuel economy--both are improved with higher compression.

RV= recreational vehicle? correct
Rv cams are built designed to give you more TQ and HP more on the TQ side to haul the Big beasts of motor homes .
most aftermarket Cam makers have a RV cam . the Lunati 62001 would be considered an RV cam

Wow. Good call Mike. With all the stuff that comes in that kit I think that is a GOOD deal. Quality name brand stuff too.

THANKS JEFFFAFA
You can get a generic RV cam kit on Ebay for about $200 but you get what you pay for when it comes to internal engine parts .
