chrome bumper rehab

I have searched the forums and most posts have to do with restoration of aluminum and anodized parts. btw Then they end with Garb showing his incredible work then they sigh and dream --- only if.

Take no offence Garb - I admire your skill and work much like the craftsmanship of the Astronaut and others here - but I need just regular advice for the truck that will never see the weekend show, but I'm trying to do the best with what I have, Just don't want to do damage due to lack of experience

PO cut the bumper and frame off all and put a steel plate under the grill. I'm removing the plate and got new "ears" to re-weld on to hang the bumper on. the bumper I have is old and only has on kink. I will try to (pound?) out the kink and want to polish the bumper to the best it can be (at our old ages without plastic surgery) It shows very tiny rust marks, a few scrapes, but looks surprisingly good.

Is steel wool the right way or should I try to polish this on my 6" grinder and drill with pads and polishing wax? Or both. Or something better?

Mother's chrome polish seems to work pretty well to remove grime and oxidation. Nothing will remove scratches from chrome without replating. To get more aggressive you can use 0000 or 000 steel wool. I have even heard of people using Cola with steel wool to clean. Regarding pounding out the dent, you're more likely to peel, damage or chip off the existing chrome, which is somewhat flexible, but not resistant to hammer blows. If you have access to a press, I would try that first.

thanks resonateur, that's great advice. I didn't know Mothers even made a chrome polish. So far everything I have used from Mothers has worked great. I'm off to the store

I seen on garage squad they used coke and aluminum foil to take off surface rust on a 60s model galaxies chrome bumpers then polished them up
