1948 F6 Steering

Finally got the old girl running and stopping and drove down the farm road. She is all over the place steering wise. I am assuming that I should replace the King pins and tie rods. Where can I get the tie road ends and king pins for the 48 f6? or can I adjust to tighten the steering up a bit?

Have you checked Rock Auto, NAPA, etc.? Many of these parts are still available from "normal" vendors such as Moog.

Have you actually checked the king pins/tie rod ends/other components for wear/damage yet? King pins are almost always needed, but check by jacking up each tire off the ground, and try rocking the tire by grabbing onto the top and bottom. You shouldn't be able to move it, or just very very slightly. Check tie rod ends for bends or other issues. Also take a peek at the spring bushings. All of these can add up to quite a bit of improvement. However, if there's still slop, you might want to try and isolate where it is.

I ordered king pin bushings from my F-4 from Job Lot in NY. They carry a lot of parts for these old trucks- even the big ones.

I got my tie rod ends from RockAuto.com. Looks like they also have the king pins and bushings...

Determine which parts are worn and order parts needed. Check the steering gear to see if it has grease. If it has no grease, chances are it is worn badly. If it has grease, you can try adjusting it. Lots of good information on the forum about checking a front end for wear, what to look for. Also some good information on adjusting the steering box.

I agree with Ray. If your truck is wandering that much as mine did it is probably the steering box. Regardless, before you order some parts that you may not need have someone sit behind the wheel and turn it in one direction just slightly until the play is taken up then do the same thing in the other direction. Crawl under the vehicle and watch what moves and what doesn't. You may see the pitman shaft coming out of the box move up and down. The box may be leaking too but if not all the grease may have already leaked out.
