'69 F350 rebuild- just beginning-
On wed the 19th My buddy Gordon used a car trailer to pick up my F350 from the PO and we got it to my house, (Lake Stevens, WA- close to Everett). The truck was wayyyy too heavy for that tilt car trailer. But we got it anyway. It had been sitting under a few noble fir trees for the last 4 years.
Everything was covered by green moss.

I spent about 2 hours yesterday
power washing the back of the bed area. This truck was used for concrete work, and it had a pile of dye in the back. My shoes have been soaking for 24 hr now and they are still black-instead of white & silver. Another 2 hours power washing off the big stuff from underneath.

I plan on replacing the alternator with a 3g one, do the upgraded light wiring and relays, put in a new fuse block. and upgrade to LED headlights. I don't know if I'll keep the 360 and and the NP435 trans. I'd like to go to a 302 and a 5 speed. But I don't know if it would has the umpf to move down the highway. Anyone got any experience with a 302 swap into a F350?

Welcome! A brother to my dump truck! You have power steering which is pretty rare on the 350's. F350's are heavy. You could get them with the 300 6 cylinder though that seems pretty rare. The factory only put in the 300 6 or the 360/390 8, and not the 302. It seems that 99% of them were 360's. I've never seen a 390 in one and IIRC, NumberDummy has stated on multiple occasions that the 360 was it for the 350's in Fleet format. The issue is torque. I would stay away from a small block. And the tires will start singing at 60mph. No real need for an overdrive. You'd probably have to down shift every time you hit an incline. These trucks were not built for speed. The alignment procedure uses a torch and bottle jacks to bend the I-beams. It will never have a great alignment. Very different from today's modern F350. Think school bus. That's exactly like it handles. Slow and purposeful. You can really get your 'old man' on in one of these. Best part is people do not expect you to go fast which is good, because you wont. Go through the brakes. Get new retaining springs for the shoes. Rockauto has them very cheap. That shifter is quite tortured. Mine is waaaay straighter than that.

The 390 is a racehorse, built more for speed.
The 360 is a draft horse, built to work slowly but with a lot of torque.
In that F350, the 302 will be like a malnourished Shetland pony.
Knowhutimean, Vern?
Someone did an 'interesting' job of mounting that radio. Here's how to do it so it looks better:

Good luck and happy wrenching!

love me some old 350s
a 302 will probably not be much fun in that big truck
one option would be to put 390 internals in that 360 and enjoy lots of torque
there is an adaptor to put a dodge version of a NV 4500 behind that motor
but be prepared to spend a little
another option would be a 351 Cleveland, lots of fun HP and torque from these and it has the small block ford trans pattern to make a newer ZF HD overdrive trans an easy option
as far as handling, my camper special with heavy front and rear sway bars handles awesome
always use a quality shock with these trucks

302s are common, parts are relatively low-buck, and there's tons of info on Windsors but a 302 is more appropriate for light duty trucks or lighter weight (around 3500 pounds) vehicles. Your going to saddle a 302 with an extra 1,000 pounds!
Think about it. That's like driving around in a Fox body Mustang with 16 bags of concrete mix at all times.

I'm guessing you picked 302 hoping for some kind of fuel economy? You still wouldn't. You'd be in to the throttle harder at all times IMHO. Ford did have the 300 I6 as a choice as stated above. But that's because the 300 had more torque than the 302. If it were me I'd stick with the FE. And granny gear 4 speed. Make things easy as you can on that motor. Headers, dual exhaust, tune up, set carb and timing with a vacuum gauge, etc.

Yea, I guess you all are right . The 302 would be under a load all of the time. I think I'll stay with the 360. It has a 2BBL motorcraft carb on it. Of course no ID tag, any ideas on what it is or which rebuild kit it needs? OR should I switch to an aftermarket? My wife has already named it "MS. Money Pit".

Only one kit for the Autolite 2100 despite what the kid behind the counter says. Get the Ford kit. It actually fits. Look on the side of the toe of the carb in front of the accelerator linkage and you will see a partial number. It should be 8T AZ for C8TF-AZ. Autolite 2100 is probably the most reliable carb ever. I've rebuilt dozens of them. Super easy, unlike a Quadrajet or a 4300.
