Gravity feed question

I am installing a gravity feed tank in my truck bed. If I fill both tanks and have the valve on will the truck system have any problem with the fuel gauge showing fuel in the tank well past the distance to empty should show 0 miles?

Your gauge will continually adjust. It takes a while to catch up but it will do it. I am feeding from a 100 gallon tank gravity feed into a 3/8" line then to a Parker filter then into the overflow tube. Split the hose connection add a tee and go.

Yep. Mine works great.60 gal tank. Got down to 213 to go yoday, then jumped to 298.

I really ignore the MTE until the gauge says the stock tank is no longer full.

Thanks for that link Sam!

So my next question is -
If you are gravity feeding from a tank that is higher than the fuel filler on the side of the truck and you are feeding into that filler neck - does that mean that you are relying on the fuel filler cap to be a "fuel tight" seal?

I'm just imagining that fuel filler neck being full of fuel all the way to the top!

Yes the cap is fuel tight, but you won't actually have fuel against the cap, as there is a little air pocket above the fill point.

The fuel caps haven't been vented in yrs.

Yeah - I'm aware that the systems are sealed, but was more concerned about someone getting a fuel bath if they opened that cap while the fuel level in the auxilliary tank was above the level of the cap..
So that would be a strike against having the connction between the tanks being always open. I'll look into the solenoid solution too... See just how much that would cost me..

Yes you could get fuel out the filler, but it is flowing so slowly thru 3/8 in pipe, it should all go out the overflow drain.

I spent about $40 for all the pipe and valves. The RDS adapter kit is $80 (retail)

I am on vacation as we speak, and played with the setup a little. It flows enough to catch up even towing at 70mph (I have g614, 75mph rated tires), at least thru the hills in Missouri!

My 91 Gallon Aux tank in the bed gravity feeds to the fuel filler pipe to the main tank. 8K miles to and from Alaska with no problems. Left the manual valve open all the time. Usually when I fueled up, I was only filling the Aux tank.

Been a while.. just a note to advise others..

I used one of the electric valves to control flow out of my RDS tank.

Last fall the darned valve stopped working.. the coil fried.. had to order another whole valve to get a replacement coil..

during this process I was looking at the duty cycle of the value..

100% duty cycle, but not continuous... what the heck is that? I thought 100 was 100?

anyhow, replaced coil and its working fine.. so, for those that have done the same, check the coil... I started blowing fuses.. every day
