Delete or Warranty
#16
I'm in the Warranty Camp on this one. I guess I look at it this way, yes I live in a state that does not currently require emission test of diesels. Notice, that I said currently. This does not mean that they won't next year or even the next.
And when or if they do I'm sure your are not going to get a pass for deleting your truck before the emission testing became law. Now, you will not only be out the $3K for the delete, but now also looking to repurchase everything to make your truck legal and stock once again.
Lastly, Federal Law prohibits tampering with Federally Mandated Emissions Equipment on a vehicle....Period. While I don't care for all this emissions crap, I am also not above the law nor do I feel that I am entitled to do so.
It's your truck, therefore it's your call.
One more thing to consider. Dealers are not supposed to take in trade any vehicle that do not meet current model year emission standards. While it has been over looked in years past, I would expect this to be an area that becomes much more of a closely looked at issue in the future.

The engine is warrantied for 5/100k years not three. Three is just the standard bumper to bumper. The rest of the powertrain is 5/60k.
That said, in most cases, I'd delete. However, not knowing where you'll be stationed is a big "IF." Here in MA they do both a physical and computer test. Spartan has a tune that will get the OBD2 part done but you have to have a lazy or friendly inspector to miss your DPF missing when they poke their head under their truck. So, your question is a tough one indeed just because of the location uncertainty.

I'm at this crossroads too. I have the option of further extending my extended warranty (to ~147k I think) or going the delete route. I've reach out to a local diesel mechanic for advice and a cost estimate. I think I would be more inclined to delete if there wasn't the fear of increasing emissions regulations! Is there anyone in the NE who is deleted and worry free?

I vote delete cause I just did the delete, I have a 3rd party warranty so I will take my truck to a diesel shop vs a dealer if I have the choice
Ill just tell them up front that I will only pay for items covered by warranty +- any upgrades.. meaning if it covers replacement of turbo for factory turbo price I will pay the difference for the upgraded one. not trying to screw anyone, if the turbo fails or something else.. I don't rag on my stuff and I take care of it so if its a failure not due to me. then ill get the warranty to pay. I am not going to be pushing HP tunes and then trying to get ford to pay for a blown head gasket , etc
