330 questions

My 330 out of my 65 f-600 needs some help.

It is just wore out. Several rings were broken and the varnish monster came out of the fuel tank and ruined everything in the fuel system.

I have a very solid 360 core. I was planning on using the 330 crank (appears to be a steel unit) in the 360 block, rods, pistons and the 330 top end hardware. THe heads are fresh from the machine shop. I am just needing to get the short block ironed out.

Am I missing anything here? thoughts...pointers..? thanks in advance.

1st the 330 is a FT family engine while the 360 is a FE. Not sure the parts will swap. While they are cousins they aint twins. You could build the 360 for torque.

I read all the time about guys swapping diesels into pickups, the ol 600 could handle the extra weight with stride.

I have an extra PSD and e4 od but just not wanting to get that deep. I need this to haul rock before fall.

After some research the bearing diameter for 360 vs 330 are the same. I know they are slightly different but there is a reason ALL blocks are cast 352... I'm going tonight to get the 360. I am confident this will work just fine....i hope..lol

Make sure the oil pump drive hole in the block (where the distributor gear sits) is the same size. If you have a 330HD the hole in the INTAKE for the distributor is different, but if it's a 330MD, it'll be the same. But I'm not sure about the block.

Otherwise, same things. The ONLY other difference might be where the oil dipstick tube goes, but if the 360 dipstick is in the block, and the 330 dipstick is on the pan, a galley plug can be stuffed in the dipstick hole

The 330 has a smaller bore than the 360, and some 330's are internal balanced, some are external, so you will need to use the 330 harmonic balancer. And not sure the 330 head gaskets, being smaller bore will work on the 360.

I will be using the 330 balancer, crank, flywheel in the 360 block.
The boss for the oil pickup bracket is there but I will have to drill and tap that hole.
The 330 was MD so I will check but I bet the dist will work. If not I can come up with one. I have a pertronix for it as well .

I'm hopefully going to get the 330 the rest of the way torn down tomorrow.
I may not put the 360 on the good stand yet tho. I will be taking it to Ohio in a few weeks for a weekend power stroke thrash. We will need the good one for that!!! Lol

The distributor from the 330 fits the 360 block just fine. Everything is go for the rebuild.

Sounds like you have it well in hand, good luck with it, and report back here when you're done, we'd like to hear another success story

Well here is a fun tidbit. The old 330 was hurt very bad.the front main cap is cracked and it was walking and wore the face of the block. The main bearings 1,3,5 are ugly and the crank will need turned . The main bearings are .002 bearings so the patch job previously was serious lol. The cam has several lobes trashed and the second can bearing looks to have spinning in the block.

Basically I'm not sure how it ran as well as it did the last time.

I think 330's were the most loyal of the FE engines Like an old dog, they just keep going until you have to put them to sleep
