Anyone want to trade gears?

I have a 2002 f350, crew cab long bed Ford 10.5 rear end, 3:73 gears, I know some models came with a lower 4:30 gear ratio.

Is anyone wanting a set of 3:73? I'm looking for 4:30

I'm in Santa Rosa , ca

1 hour north of San fransico

There's a bit more involved than just unbolting and rebolting. There is a lot of work to set gears.

Probably easier to just swap axles from a junkyard truck with 4.10 or something.

Or undo a set of U bolts, calipers and driveshafts... Swap whole axles. could get something like that done in 4 hrs or so I'd think.

None of the axles in superduties have third members. 9" ford axles and toyotas have third members.

That's what I did, rolled the stock 3.73s out and rolled a new to me set of 4.88 housings under the truck, saved me over a grand from what I was quoted by a local shop for the same gear change.

I guess its a generation thing...

third member.. final drive... from brake drum to brake drum.. aka today wheel hub to wheel hub....

engine is first member
transmission is second member
rear axle with drive system is third member...

Nooo! The third member is the Punkin! Been working on them for about 60 years and have never heard of the entire axle being referred to as a "third member". Why I don't know. Maybe others will ring in.

Ya, IMO a 3rd member is the removable center chunk. As in ford 9 inch and the Toyota.

from Yahoo Answers

Best Answer: third member is the assembly bolted to the front of the differential housing. it has the drive shaft yolk, the pinion shaft, ring and pinion gears, and bearings in it. the axle shafts are the first two members, making this assembly the "third". racers like this style of rear end, they can set up many different gear ratios for quick changes at different tracks. instead of changing out entire rear ends. not just for toyota's. ford makes a lot of this style, a lot of semi's and larger trucks run this style also.

So, I am wrong again.... Cleveland learning.
