51' Power steering - rack and pinion

Hi guys this is my first post!

I want to put power steering on my 51' that i purchased in April.

I have read many of the articles on here and decided to go with the Toyota setup, but it would not work. The truck has a 350 Buick engine out of a 79' Skylark.

I was able to lift the engine and install the Toyota box only to find that the headers hit the box and 1.5" short of being set back into the engine mount.

I have sent back the Toyota kit and have been looking for an alternative and i found this from POL. Has anybody used it and what are your thoughts.

https://www.performanceonline.com/19...nd-PINION-KIT/

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Ben

Welcome to FTE!

I think the Toyota box often interferes with the header, leading many on here to find different headers so they can use the T-box.

I'm hoping others who have actually done this will pipe in.

I used the Toyota box on my '51 F1, with a crate SBC 383 stroker. I had to move the motor 1" toward the passenger side, and use rams horn headers. Room to install in that configuration, but tight. There are pics in the slideshow link below, if you have the patience to find the right ones. Use the scroll function on the bottom to find the pic, then enlarge it. Here is one.

Can you shift the engine to the passenger side or find/ make/ have made headers to fit? Block huggers will often work.
I'm considered one of the suspension steering gurus around here (I co-wrote the article on the Toyota install) I would not want the xtra unsprung weight of the rack mounted to the axle, and having to have a slip joint in the column that is always in motion is asking for wear/binding issues. If you use a power rack, then the hoses are also in constant motion they were not designed for and located where they can be easily damaged.
We just went thru the header issue with my friend Gary's F1 with Toy box and very wide '07 4.6L 3V engine. We had to install the engine 1" to the right and have a driver's side header custom made.

Yes, if the header flanges are symmetrical you may try swapping the headers side for side, or using two pass side units.
