Alternator - 110A vs. 135A - Single vs. Dual

My 2006 6.0 has a single alternator setup, and the alternator needs to be replaced. Can I replace it with the 135A alternator that's designed to run as the upper alt for the 2-alternator setup?

Thanks! Did you have to grind your alternator bracket for clearance? From what I can tell, the 135A unit has a larger casing.

Even the old style 3G case bolts right up. The shop that built mine did some grinding on the bottom of it but I don't think that was even necessary on a 6.0 engine. (Sorry about the crappy picture).

And this is a Leese-Neville 230 amp unit used in emergency services. Bolt and plug, no adaptor needed either.

I know XDP sells them for about $350 and I believe Nations Alternator Starter also carries them and a higher amp unit in the same lineup, as well as other manufacturers. L-N is standard equipment in many commercial and transit vehicles. I may be trading my truck in this fall so I'll put the 110 back on and resell this if I do.

When I installed this one I put the 110, 140 and this one on the bench. This one just outsized the others. And just after the motor starts with the GPs still on you just watch the voltage climb back up.

If you go with the 135 AMP get the smaller pulley.
You will find that the voltage will come up sooner at idle.

Look for a 140 amp versus the 135 and look into getting the 58mm pulley

I used Advance Auto, ask for the 2005 model, it's 140amp unit. Use coupon code TRT30 and save $50 off the price. Buy on line and do in store pickup.

crazy that the 230amp is plugNplay. I would think the wiring would need upgraded to handle this larger output no?

Mine came with the factory 140A but I did what Josh and Sean are saying and put the 58mm pulley on and it jumps right up even with GPM still active...

And TooManyToys: I had the same Q as Kemicalburns -- I would think a wiring upgrade would be needed?

Sorry guys, my term plug and play was to if you need an adaptor for the regulator connection. Yes you do need to add an additional wire from the output terminal to the passenger battery terminal of 4ga (mine is 2ga)and a fuse of 125-150 amps in combination with the factory wires.
