[QUOTE=somethingclever;15578557]Your curiosity will be insatiable - there are no identifiers on your engine that will state in what vehicle it was originally

Did Ford use both mid sump and rear sump oil pans on their three eight five blocks?

Yes .. Mid sump for vans and was also used for 460 to 4wd conversions until the 80's rear sump pans started becoming more available for 4wd use .. However you have neither of these if it's a car 429/460 .. So have you done any more work to ID the stroke of the motor ?

D1VE-6015-AB or A1B or A2B applies to all 1971/73 429 bare blocks, all 1971/78 460 bare blocks, and some 1979 460 bare blocks.

Measure the stroke to determine if a 429 or 460.

The only way you can pin down...somewhat...what the engine came from is by posting ID numbers from the carb tag, EGR valve, exhaust manifolds, if these parts are original.

1973/79 F100/350 460's use unique motor mounts, different than 1975/79 Econoline and 1968/78 Passenger Cars.

I love ford and but I'm use to mopar and without a doubt the chrysler numbering/casting/dating systems are much simpler and straight forward. So yes I'm the one who's confused cause I'm not use to ford's numbers.

Ha I thought you were teasing me about the egr plate numbers. I'll get those. The pan is a mid sump and I'm contemplating if I'll be able to get it off without lifting one or both motor mounts (1970 f250 4x4). Pan could of been added from another vehicle. I'll get those egr #s tomorrow.

Anyone know if my oil pickup will prevent removal of the pan?

D3VE heads are 429 and 460!

The ID number D7PE-9A589-CA on the cast iron 429/460 EGR/carb spacer plate is the 1977 "service part replacement" for the original 1973/74 D3VE-9A589-AC aluminum spacer plate that melted due to heat.

Applications: 1973 429 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars; 1973/74 460 Ford/Merc/Lincoln Passenger Cars; 1974 F100 460.

D3AE-9P753-AD = D3AZ-9P753-A .. Adapter-EGR Valve: 1973 429 & 1973/74 460 Passenger Cars; 1974 F100/350 460.
