Not sure about Mercury, but the 51-52 Canadian Ford trucks had block lettered tailgates similar to the 53 and up. Saw this one at the Barrie, ON swap meet a few years ago.

All of the research I have done indicates that the block lettering on tailgate is correct for a 58 Merc.
