Alaska resident with State Farm insurance. New 2015 KR CCLB superduty.
Added it to my State Farm policy (I switched from Geico when I bought the truck) along with my F250 and a trailer.
Was contacted by State Farm today saying they are canceling the insurance policy on my F350 because they consider it a commercial vehicle. The GVWR is 11,400lbs, but curb weight is about 7k.
I sent them pictures of the truck and one of the door sticker and basically said they are crazy.
What gives??????? My driving record is clean so it has nothing to do with that. They said they would be able to write me a commercial policy.

Ran into the same thing with Good Sam Insurance two years ago. I told them my F-450 is a "Pickup" not a "Semi". I told them it's a private vehicle, not commercial. I told them it's a recreational vehicle used to pull my fifth wheel.
All to no avail. The only way they would continue to insure my F-450 was if I put the trailer on the same policy at twice the premium I was paying elsewhere.
I called Dougherty Insurance in Sioux Falls at the recommendation of my mail provider and they found a "Medium Duty RV Policy" that covers my truck and trailer and saved me over $600.00 a year.
Might be worth a call to them to see if they can help or if they can recommend an agency in Alaska that acts as an agent for the same insurance company.

I had a like problem with my F-550 Hauler. I used it for pulling my 5th wheel as well as daily transportation. I simply changed insurance companies, saved money and went on my way.
Currently I am with Texas Farm Bureau and smile everytime I pay my premiums due to the savings over the others.

I just upgraded from a F-150 to an F-350. I also have State Farm and when we did we drove to their office, had the guy come out and look at it and get the VIN number. I told him we traded in the half ton and to take that off and add this. Haven't heard another work from my agent. So you might just check with another State Farm agent or might just be time to shop around for insurance. I find that's good to do periodically anyway.

I also have State Farm. They didn't blink an eye when I gave my 2010 Escape to my niece and bought the truck. Same premium too. Could it be that I've been with them 40 years and also have the wife's car (2013 C-Max Energi), the house, a rental property and a $5M umbrella policy through them as well? I feel bad for everyone that got cancelled just because they have a F350+. Makes me worried about all F350 owners (myself included) but also raises the question about agents as mentioned by Razehm above. Like him, I also went directly to my agent when I got my truck. I'm guessing that maybe if they "see" it, they'll know that it's a pickup and not a semi or bobtail. Good luck finding a new policy.

In Sask. you have to get special insurance if your truck and load including towed load weighs over 10,000 Lbs. It is mandatory gov't insurance here although you can get private for collision, PPD liability above and beyond the gov't mandated minimum. No going to other insurance peddlers option here in our socialist paradise.

You guys are lucky to only deal with insurance. Any DRW truck in MA has to by law registered commercial. Commercial registration, insurance, and annual inspections. The law was created to prevent contractors from registering their trucks with passenger plates. So, all the cheater contractors just moved to SRW trucks and the RVers got screwed. We have a state senator who submits a law every year to correct this and every year it dies in committee. Ugh. Still holding out hope for this year with a 450 on my horizon after the re-design... https://malegislature.gov/Bills/189/Senate/S1825 If not, I guess I'll be shopping insurance with you all...
