98 expedition 4wd gear shift cable removal help. Please.

Ok, so I am trying to replace a gear shift link cable (Ford Part# YL3-7E395-AC

My plastic sleeve broke.

View above steering wheel. See ducktap on left of shaft

Tape so that I could shift it back into park.

I know not much shocking about that. Mine broke sometime while I was working on the truck. Right, around when I got that thought to disconnect it. I was getting from hanging half in and half out the vehicle with my legs on some what under the truck. Long story short, I got good insurance . Damn wheel chuck didn't stop the vehicle from rolling. Need new ones now. Anyway, I have done the search on replacing it and so far this site. I haven't run into anyone that has replaced it on a 4wd. No space to get my hands up there.

From under vehicle. Long rusty tube is drive shaft to front wheels.

I currently don't have anything that will reach in there. Now, I believe I could get one of those extended needle nose pliers and give it a try. What have you guys with 4wd done to replace this. Squeezing it by-hand isn't working for me. Maybe my sausage fingers are not cut-out for this job.

When I changed the shift cable back on my 97 expedition I used channel lock pliers to reach up there and squeeze the tabs in.

While you're into it, be sure to make sure the two T25 torx bolts indicated by the red circles are tight. They like to loosen up and create slop in the shifter.

Thanks Allore. You chime in again. The ones I had reached but didn't have enough leverage to get my hands around the cable. So I did the manly thing and cut it out. My dad was going to bring me some longer ones, after work. The sawsall out already for cuting branches, so the guy in me said "why, not?". Few seconds and a hit with from the hammer and flat head, that thing was out of the way..

I certainly well look at the torq screws. That's mostly what I came across in my search. It did feel a little loose when I was checking, just had bigger fish to fry at the time. Thanks again sir!

I will be putting the new one in later. Had to leave for my 10yr son's dr appointment.

Looked at the torque screws had one loose maybe 5cms.

Correct me, if I am wrong. The gear select/Neutral safety switch on the trans; the park position is pointing to rear/ all the way to the back not pushed forward, Correct?

Correct, move the lever all the way towards the rear of the vehicle for Park.

Not sure why I posted this in the other thread but this is what issue I had. Key word "had". Alloro I thought I had the lever pushed all the way back, but turns out I was wrong. I couldn't start the vehicle. After looking a few things up and remembering that I had an issue really getting my hands up there. I used a 4 to 5" flat head (not saying that length is required, it is what I had close to me). I pushed it all the way back. Vehicle started.

Now, I can't get the lovely lady to start. What the heck did I do wrong. I only have a few connectors not connected. Connectors to the center console. I am not sure i want that put back. Blend door actuator since I took that out. Plus they should havr nothing to do with my vehicle starting.

I get power to the vehicle; all lights and such power on. Nothing to the starter. I don't hear it click or anything.

As stated before it did start right after disconnecting the original shift cable. At some point when removing it. It did shift into reverse. I manually pushed it back into park. Now i get now no start. I will start with testing power levels to starter. How much power should it be getting?

Sorry for posting that in the other thread folks.

Also to get the new end back on the lever. I used my 1/2 drive racket (Craftsman) which is kind of ovalish shaped not rounded and the long flat head to push it on, since I couldn't get enough leverage to use my hands. I tried it didn't work. I am just glad to hear it run and see no leaks so far. Will post updates in other thread (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post15570519) of that issue, in a few weeks/months.

I doesn't matter how you accomplished the task, only that you did.

I did that job not too long ago in my 4X4 Navigator, and managed to get it out without a long pliers (I bought those recently though for another job!) but can't recall how. Anyway, the cable came out intact, in one piece, and perfect condition(!) as the issue was not the cable, but the trans position switch (whatever that thing is called) binding due to rust buildup on the shift shaft. So, maybe I need to find that good cable and put it on the 'free' to a good home thread.

Can't argue with that logic! So very true. Sad thing is now, I rarely driver her. I now drive the Toyota Sienna to drop the kids off at school, no a/c and all. Maybe will have to do that job next summer.

Sounds like a good idea to me.
