1994 won't start. HELP I NEED MY TRUCK

Hi first I'll start off by saying I'm new to the forum. I'm a chick and a huge diesel fan. Always had one 95 powerstroke, 2004 6.0 etc. I am a horse trainer and must have my truck!! I purchased a 1994 turbo diesel and was told it was an IDI turbo diesel. I got it home, I knew it needed some injectors right off and I replaced all of them(discovering it had powerstroke injectors not IDI) replaced hoses, all belt-pulleys etc, batteries, rear seal, clutch, and air filter . Truck ALWAYS fired up fine even sitting a week in 14degrees. When we did the clutch I had mechanic change the fuel filter. All of a sudden won't fire up just turns over of course kills batteries. So I replaced cam sensor(wait to start light) comes on fine. Checked/charged batteries Still no start. Trying to locate mechanic to check codes. Hopefully will get one out asap. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. Where did you get the cam sensor? And the wts light does come on? Just wanted to make sure I read that right.

If it's a 7.3 PS, make sure your CPS is only Ford or International. Also, check your pigtail to the IPR. Wiggle it and see if it will start. If it does, wiggle it while it's idling and see if truck shuts down. Make sure your fuel bowl is filling up and check fuse 22 as well. If the heater in the bowl is shorting at the connection to the side of the fuel bowl, it'll pop that fuse and cause a no start. If so, disconnect it cuz you don't need it. Let us know what happens and we'll get this figured out. Welcome to FTE!

Hi again the kicker is I'm assuming its a PS i called ford myself and they couldn't locate any info how crazy. They said it more than likely was a PS. It also has all the upgrades of the late 94 PS (power locks windows, body kit, nicer interior, etc etc) they said that was mainly only an option for PS? *sigh* anyways here is the VIN 1FTJW35F5REA44500

I did get the CPS at Autozone only because the mechanic was there to put it on right away and i was on the way. The guy at auto zone told me that it would get it started if that was the problem but if it did start go back and replace it with the ford CPS asap but this CPS would at least get me where i needed to go shortly if it was the "problem". I agreed and have no problem replacing it with the ford one. However no start.

It may have been not the best part but i was desperate to just see if it was the issue and just to get it running.

I saw the posts about the #22 fuse. Also that i should get the black one not the grey?

Yes the WTS light comes on no problem.

Whats the best way to check and make sure its getting fuel?

I was almost done fixing it up to get ready for paint this winter. The last things i was going to replace is the Fuel sending unit(so i know how much diesel in front tank) and drop a new ford fuel pump on it with warranty only because i will be traveling everywhere with this truck. I want it ultimate travel ready. The truck has 204K miles on it. It doesn't have a gooseneck ball in it which ill put in finally. It was only used on weekends to pull a race car and a flatbed in its life. Motor was never "broke in" hence maybe why this crap is happening to me! or just my bad luck ;-) LOL!

Ok so by research online it states the 8th digit in the VIN it would be an F if its a power stroke and a K if it was an IDI. Mine is an F so its a PS if thats correct! Truck was built in Jefferson County, KY. Ford Division.

This should help. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Byb...1qRU1VVGc/view I would get a ford cps and make sure you are getting fuel. You said you don't know how much fuel is in one of your tanks so I would put some more in just to make sure. As far as the fuel pump, they are all made by the same company so just get one at the best price.

To Check fuel there is a schrader valve on the drivers side of fuel bowl. You can use a stick type tire gauge and just put it on there like you are checking air in your tires.

I do know the front fuel tank is full I filled it up but my gauge isn't reading correctly its stuck at a quarter tank lol! So I knew I better get a fuel sending unit to replace the bad one, I hate counting miles. I already emailed my local dealership to purchase the ford CPS. I need to get it diagnosed I guess to know what codes are coming back. It could be a few things from research it looks like. I've got to get psi checked I'm sure as well. I already have the new fuel pump which I'll replace regardless when mechanic comes out. Then I hope this problem will be fixed by either a fuel pump, or get the psi checked plus diagnose it to see what codes come back so if I know if its HPOP related, fuel related, etc. *sigh* I hope this is fixed quickly. I need this truck bad.

The hardest part is a reliable diesel mechanic that will show up and be ready to handle the task. Ive been through 3 mechanics now just for being unreliable. 😞

On the fuel pressure, you need at least 20 lbs. WHILE CRANKING the engine. These old gals have a mechanical fuel pump, so the engine needs to be turning over to activate the fuel pump.

The sending unit may be fine. If it's responding at all, at least you know it's not completely inop. Usually a failed sending unit shows up as the gauge going way past full (infinite resistance). You may just have a float that's filling with fuel. The float is available separately, for a LOT less money than the sending unit itself.
