Homemade tailgate

Well after looking at my options and not wanting to spend 500 on an aftermarket, and wanting something a little different, I decided to build my own.
1x2 steel sides and 1 inch diameter thick wall tubing for the top and bottom, and 16 guage for the skins...water jet cut logo will be plug welded and bonded to the skin where the template is now..

Great job, I think if I did that I would turn the FORD cutout into a 3rd brake light. I may just have to do that!

Really looks good! Where did you get the Ford logo or did you make it yourself?

Thanks all. It was a lot if welding. 28 feet of welding and grinding, counting both sides. The ford logo was cut on a water jet and yes I had thought about the 3rd brake light. That was the original plan, and why it's not permanently mounted yet. That is still up in the air.

Now that's a job well done, I really admire those of you that can in vision something like this and then make it happen. My brain just doesn't work like that, and never will, no matter how much I try to learn. My hats off to you.

Nice work! Several of us have built our own tailgates......all different designs. Great to see someone take an idea and make it happen.

I don't know if I like the inside or outside best. They always look great when they are refined and finished but I hate to see the planning and execution covered up. I agree that these types of posting are inspirational.

Beautiful work, but curious what it weighs? It looks a bit heavy from my house.

Just a little more than stock weight wise, but way more durable, and the extra weight over the rear wheels will come in handy with a little horsepower under the hood.
