How much oil to my new AC System ?

I am converting my AC system to R134a. I have replaced the old condenser, the old accumulator/dryer, put on new hoses and replaced the old York compressor with a new Sanden Style compressor SD709. The new compressor came with a tag that said it already had oil added.

I am flushing out the evaporator before connecting all my new hoses.

The new accumulator is factory stock one as is the new condenser.

So how much additional oil do I need to add to the system and is it OK to put it in the accumulator/dryer? How much would be in the new compressor.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Don't know if this helps, but I bought a whole kit from Classic Auto Air that contains everything you mentioned but haven't installed it yet. They told me that the new compressor contains all the oil and not to add any when filling the system. They also told me to find out what the R12 capacity was from the factory and only add 70% of that when adding the new 134. Good luck! Let us know how it works!

If your compressor comes with oil in it, there is no more you need to do in that regard. To answer your question, we keep our A/C compressors at work at half full according to a sight glass.

Just bought a similar compressor. Look up the number on the Sanden site and it will tell you how much oil to add - on mine it said 3.3-8% of refrigerant capacity. According to my truck refrigerant label, depending on oil the R12 ran max 2 to 2.75 pounds of refrigerant, so that meant something like 1.5-3.5 oz of oil. When I contacted the guy who sold me the compressor he said the factories are very hit-or-miss on how much oil they add, so: drain the factory compressor oil, add about 3oz to the compressor and 2 oz to the dryer. That way you KNOW what is in the system instead of guessing what the factory may or may not have installed. I figure he is the guy managing my warranty, so I did what he said. An 8 oz bottle of R134 oil with dye was about $15, $13 without dye.
