My DIY E99 bellowed up-pipes

On a bone stock truck, there is no reason to change over to L99+ up-pipes, turbo, etc.

I'm helping a friend do a bunch of stuff to his minty, beautiful E99 ECLB 4wd 6spd truck with 99k miles on it. One of the scheduled projects is clutch replacement, so we figured we'd install bellowed up-pipes while the trans is out - because we can!

Everybody knows E99 bellowed up-pipes are ridiculously priced - so I decided to buy some bellows and build some here. I've been secretly saving/stashing E99 up-pipes, etc so I could do this.

Anyway, pics are worth a thousand words and I know that's what ya clicked on this thread for - so here ya go!

Apparently I haven't uploaded the pics after I pulled them off and finished welding them... I'll post them ASAP.

The pipes are welded to the flanges at the collector, then the donuts seal flanges to the collector. The pipes actually thin at the donuts and that is what causes them to leak over time. By welding the pipes, they no longer move and the donuts should last forever.

Nice Job Jason !! I had made a set myself but I put the bellows where the E99 IH put them. I'm going to post a link to that build and the only real problem I ran into was using the stupid Felpro donut gaskets. If I had used the OEM ones I would not have had a problem. I actually found a set of used 98 IH up pipes that I plan on putting on my truck next time I go to change my compressor wheel. Also for guys stuck running a E99 Bob at Dieselsite has plemum inserts. http://www.dieselsite.com/no-crush19...msupports.aspx

So if I ever have to reuse my home made E99 bellows I'm going to use OEM donut gaskets or just make some flat flanges and weld to the pipe so I can use the E99 IH flat gasket. Mind you the Ford E99 baby butt is the same as the 98IH baby butt.

Thanks Scott and Ed!

I was disappointed with the dieselsite plenum inserts after installing so many of the Riffraff ones for L99+ plenums...

Aren't the collectors the same for E99 and L99??? I will check that again tomorow.

I always say I know the difference between a welder and a welding machine - and I ain't no welder that's for sure!!! My booger welds are big and ugly, but they won't leak. Little brother is a welder and I usually just tack stuff up and get him to come over and make it look good (he just lives 3 doors down) - but I also tend to lack patience and these are for a friend who believes in function before fashion!

Jason I haven't had my hands on a L99 baby butt so I couldn't say. But the factory '98 IH bellow set up I have the baby butt still has the 45* degree cut for the donut in it and same casting #'s as the stock Ford E99. So I would interested to see if the L99 is the same please post up when you find out. Now as far as the dieselsite plenum inserts why do you say that? I have yet to install my dieselsite E99 plenum inserts. Clay at the time I bought mine he did not make ones for the E99.

It is sad for me to say but I was once a welder and now being blind in one eye and have had cataract surgery in the other eye I don't do any welding. My problems with my eyes are from welding and tacking things without a welding hood over the years. So to you and all that do any welding '"Always use a welding hood!" I learned the hard way and I wouldn't want anyone else to have to. But I am very lucky to have a young man that lives across the street that does my welding for me now and he is better then I ever was. Not that my welds were bad they just where not always that pretty to look at.

The collectors are different and not interchangeable. The bolt distance is different on the flange.

Looks great Jason, thanks for sharing. Where did you get the bellows(es)? Are they stainless?

If you are just doing a clutch why did you pull the cab and put a torque converter on it?
