Rear end questions
I blew up my rear end, and want to get some insight. I had it towed to a shop and they said it would be $5100 for a used rear end including brakes, and $6600 for a reman. This sounds ridiculous to me. It is a 2002 F350 DRW with a Dana 80. I live in Maryland, and I dont know what to expect, what should I pay for a rear?

what exactly is broken in it?if the differential is shot a duratrac is about 650,ring and pinion is 200 -300?5100 dollars for a used rear is insane get your truck out of there, look on craigslist or call local junkyards if you need one in a hurry if you have some time and plan to keep the truck replace everything and upgrade it ,and find a shop where they arent on crack

A "non criminal" shop can rebuild it brake to brake for half of what you were quoted. $5K for a stock rear end is insane. I've seen complete junkyard dana 80's in the $800 range.

the ring and pinion may not be bad, they need to be inspected by opening the cover and looking for chips on the teeth,or very uneven wear by placing indigo blue or the yellow compound on the teeth and rotating the gears.it could just be the diff bearings or the clutch packs in the rear are worn. What gear ratio do you have? How do you plan to use the truck?towing heavy?occasional towing?I am a big fan of the detroit tru trac differential. You need another shop or someone who knows what they are doing to tell you what is wrong but get away from that shop

Is it a 4x4? If so you need to stay with the gears you have or change both front and back diff's to match. Get your truck out of that shop and check car-parts.com Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
