Hoping to finally get started on my 1950 Ford f2 soon. Probably going to do the usual power brakes, 12v conversion, stuff like that. I'm considering replacing the flathead and transmission with something a little more modern. Has anyone done a job like this? Just curious to see what it was swapped for and how you like it. Modifications needed, stuff like that. Thanks.

Yes, I rebuilt and installed a 1999 Cobra 4.6L DOHC engine in my F1. I am still in the process of completing it.

Here are some questions for you:

How open to a bigger budget are you?

How mechanically inclined are you?

How ELECTRICALLY inclined are you (most important)?

How are you with fabrication work?

Things you will need:

Engine: 302 EFI, 4.6L/5.4L Single or Dual overhead cam (2,3 or 4 valve)/5.0 Coyote or you can go with a Hemi or LS Chevy if you choose to (Im not a fan of crossbreeding)
Transmission (auto or manual)
Engine mounts (many universal mounts or engine specific)
Trans crossmember (same as the engine mounts, I used speedway 6 inch drop trim to fit for about $80)
Engine Control Unit (might need to be programmed)
Wire harness (can be aftermarket or stock unit modified)

The biggest part other than the wiring is the fabrication. You will need a welder and some practice if you havent welded before.

Thanks for the advice. I'm a decent self taught mechanic but have no electrical or fabrication experience. The upside is I know friends who do. I'd like to keep the flathead in there. It turns manually with a socket but gives some resistance. But I'm not sure it fires. Got some time to think about it. Thanks for the help!

If you go for the 5.4l get one after 2003. The97-02's tend to pop sparkplugs . Ford fixed that after 2003. My 98 popped the #4 plug awhile back. Put a time sert in to fix it.
