I dont believe you want to use Mercon V in these older transmissions because it is a much thinner fluid meant for newer vehicles.

As far as fomoco reccomending it as a suitable replacement, well, they also say its fine for a ZF5. Not because its the best, but so they only need to stock one fluid. A reccomendation of conveinence?

You wont find "mercon" any more most likely. What you want is a name brand Dex/Merc such as Castrol Dex/Merc. It meets the old Mercon specifications and is easy to find in gallon jugs for cheap.

you owe it to yourself to leave your personal beliefs out of it and simply research the facts and specs, then you can make a more informed decision.

for those who want to shortcut and leave out their own researching.this is all you need to know:

I apologize, I was basing my response on a previous knowledge of the fluid when it was apparently NOT recommended for the older transmissions when it first came out, and has since beer reformulated so it now is?

Here is an example from a F150 page, borrowed from a t-bird page:

Regardless, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers with my outdated knowledge.
