95 E-150 Sputters under a load. HELP!
I've had my van to two shops and no one can figure it out. It has a strait 6 in it (love those motors!!) and idling, it misses now and then, you hit the gas any more than 1/4 and it about sputters and dies if you don't let off the gas. It's fouled out the plugs, exhost smells like gas. The only thing that no one has put on is a new computer. Would the computer cause this issue? I'm disabled and bought a truck but it offers no protection for my electric wheelchair, I NEED my van!!

Have you or the shops checked for engine fault codes? Does it happen from cold or get worse as the engine gets to temperature? I don't think an oxygen sensor can be so out of whack. Maybe the MAF or MAP sensor, whichever it has, is bad but that would probably register a fault.

I think you need to find a third shop, one that has knowledge and experience with the older vehicles.
If a shop can not find the OBD connector for the OBD I system, I don't think I would let them work on my vehicle.
Assuming that your taking this to a "Car Center" ask around and try to find a good true mechanic in your area.
To answer your one question, Yes, the ECU can go bad, the capacitors can leak and cause the ECU not to function properly. From what you write, you getting way too much gas in the system, if you smell "gas fumes" out the exhaust, then it's running too rich. Could be caused by a bad fuel pressure regulator, or a bad Throttle Positioning Sensor. Also bad, leaking fuel injectors could cause this problem.

I live in in the middle of no ware, the 2 shops and a dealer are my only choices and it wont make it to the city of Ashland. They tried a new throttle position sensor and fuel pressure regulator. I don't think anyone's tried the O2 sensor yet and it's got a leak in the exhaust before the sensor, No ones wanted to remove the broken bolts to fix it. The motor that's in it is a strait 6, not the original V8, I don't think the guy before me hooked the port up or something, it's not ware it should be.

If your '95 is like my '93, the self-test port is between the battery and the coolant reservoir along the driver side inner fender.
