1990 F350 460 4x4 update and questions

Greetings Everyone, well I have been busy pulling apart my 1990 F350 460 4x4. The plan is to do a quick refurbishment of the truck for this winter. I pulled out the T18 and the NP205 and will be installing a ZF5 speed and the B&W1356 T-case. It looks like the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket are leaking so I am pulling the engine to replace them. I will probably check the main bearings and the rod bearings as well.

Anyway, I am thinking about putting headers on her. I have been looking at headers and so far a decent pair seems to be in the $300 range. I am looking for a pair that has a thicker mounting flange. What is a good thickness for a mounting flange that won't be prone to warping from heat? I found a pair that is 7/16" and 16 gauge steel. Lastly, can these be put in with the engine in the truck or should they be put on while the engine is out? Thanks for all your help. It is a blessing.

Wow, I'm surprised no responses... I thought that someone would have used headers.

L&L long tubes are the best mainstream header for the 460.

They can be installed in the tuck.

Cam it while the engine is out.

Since you're recommending he can the 460 do you have recommendations on cams that will work with his setup? Be careful selecting headers, there can be figment issues with the 5 speeds. I really look forward to seeing what you come up with

Update. Yesterday I worked for several hours trying to the ZF5 out of the 95 F350. Rust is a PITA! The stupid bolt broke off on the starter. The one that the starter has that is threaded (top bolt mount). So the only thing I can think of doing is getting out the torch and heating up the transmission in that area to see if I can slide the broken bolt through the corroded hole in the transmission...

What types of fitment problems are there in the headers? Are they too close to the tranny? Knowing what kind of cam would be helpful if I decide to go that route.

I believe the fittment issue is with the slave cylinder for the hydraulic clutch. If you do a search on here for 7.5 5 speed headers I believe you'll find the info. There was someone who had used Headman headers even though headman customer support couldn't confirm they would fit. It may be that they just hadn't tried them on a 5speed. Just wanted you to be aware of possible issues. From what I could tell you would want a set with the Y pipe so the exhaust routes down the passenger side.

I got the transmission pulled with the help of my friend today. Now comes all the fun of pulling the front clip on my F350 to pull the 460. Then a new main seal and oil pan gasket then she should be ready to go back together.

Here is a question for you all. Why are these two flywheels different? The first one is from my 90 F350 with the 460. Note how thin it is. The second is from my 95 F350 also a 460, and note how thick it is. I noticed that the 95 has a larger diameter clutch and pressure plate. I also noticed that the 90 has 3 fingers that ride on the throw out bearing vs the numerous ones on the 95. The 95 must be the heavy duty variety.

Here is the 1990's Flywheel.

Here is the 95's flywheel.

I was working on my truck again and I have the entire front clip off except for the radiator support piece. It is heavily rusted, exfoliated on the bottom, which I noticed is common... I found these replacements on ebay. Has anyone used these? Are they of decent quality? What is the difference between the ones that have and do no have AC?

Hmm, I must have not researched this enough on here or something, because this thread keeps having the tumble weeds blowing through. I am sure that someone has some type of information on the flywheel and the radiator support holders. I am sure I am not the only guy who has one... If I did something, or didn't do something on this thread, PM me so I don't keep wasting time on this one. I will then let it blow off into the endless space of cyberdom. LOL
