Fiat-Crysler goat tough recall!!

Looks like about 500,000 Ram trucks so far.
And the scary part for those that like Dodges....
Will these repurchased cars end up in circulation?
Some will. FCA "may remedy and resell any vehicle repurchased" under the buyback program, according to NHTSA's consent order. The automaker intends to do that for the vehicles it will buy back, Mayne said.

Injuries being a different, serious subject, I wish we could point and laugh but Ford has had their fair share. (This is limited to the joking fun of picking on each other of the big three.) Although this is a new level of recall...an entire buyback? This is going to be costly. Sadly for the owners, it isn't the full price as it doesn't include depreciation so the owner still loses since the cost of a new truck is even more than it was 5+ years ago.

According to the news article I read it will only $2.5 Billion if 1/4 of the cars in the program are bought back... REMEMBER they get to resell them though...
So that means if they all were bought back it could top $10 Billion.
That doesn't count the $105 million in fines or the people that get trade in assistance and $100 gift cards.

Yes, Ford and GM also have their no recall issues when known problems exist issues too. So we don't point and laugh.

Actually the tanks inside the cab were a bigger fiasco and then in 73 GM moved them outside the frame rail under the body. Side collisions were very intertaining if you weren't the ones in the truck.

Yeah moving fuel tanks like that seems crazy. Although, bad things happen during crashes, no way around it. Modern cars and trucks are waaay better! Usually.
What happened with the Pinto, I seem to recall (it's been a long time) something about the fuel filler tube shearing off in a crash or something like that, resulting in a fire after gasoline sprays over the hot exhaust.
A small design change or metal plate was suggested, cost just a few bucks. Well internal documents were produced showing that the bean counters figured it would cost on balance, less to fight any lawsuits in court, than spend an extra $5 bucks per car. I think that's what really made them look bad.
