I am getting closer to the end of my project and will be making a gas tank cover for it soon. When I got the truck a few years ago the gas tank cover was already gone. I assumed the 65 year trucks tank covers were vinyl and the 66 truck tank covers were carpet. I recently removed the lower headliner cardboard pieces along with the custom cab aluminum trim that goes along the side of the headliner. I found trapped underneath were portions of red loop carpet.


Did the vinyl covers in 65 have loop carpet sewn on the edges? Was it possible for the 65 rangers come with either style cover?


My truck is body style F81 and was built in April of 65 in the Kansas City plant.

F81: F = Red Crinkle all Vinyl (bucket seats) / 81 = 81B Custom Cab with Ranger package.

Parts catalog does not list the material, but 1965/66's used the same covers except in 1965, the cover was red, while in 1966 it was burgundy.

 

My 65 ranger has the red loop carpet with vinyl edges over the gas tank. It looks original to the truck as it is badly faded other than where the buckets were. (the truck had a bench in it when I bought it)
