I'll say it again - how much is a decent replacement transmission for a 06 E350 5.4?

I'm guessing a Ford/OEM reman'd unit uninstalled would run you $1800 or so---installation adding another $800-$1000 depending who does the work.

I've heard tales of a full replacement hired out would cost $2700-$3500 so that's all pretty consistent.

Not to rub salt but I've got a local guy who rebuilds 4R70W's for about $400 complete, a friend of his pulls and reinstalls the transmission for $300. All things considered that's not only affordable but done by guys I completely trust.

How much more for a torque converter? I know I can look it up but I don't know what brands to trust other than OE.

I've never bought a TC myself---shouldn't run more than $100 for the OEM style. If I weren't buying from the dealer or an otherwise reputable supplier of auto trans parts I'd suggest NAPA etc---hate to do that job more than once.

Shifting gears, pun intended, is swapping a tranny something that can be done in a parking lot during daylight hours? Is it plug-n-play or do electronic modules have to be introduced using $$$ equipment?

I just got one for a 96 van with 351 engine. Got it from Ford dealer for $1900 (the Ford website quoted $2300), and it came with fluids and torque converter. Did the work myself.
