Anyone know what could cause code P0607 - Control Module Performance?

Truck seems to be driving fine (except it just recently developed what I think is either the cam phaser tick or an exhaust manifold leak on the passenger side).

I haven't tried clearing the code to see if it comes back.

This is on a 2006 F150 FX4 with the 5.4L...

 

According to the service manual this is caused by corrupted RAM within the PCM. Possible causes include PCM reprogramming, aftermarket performance products, or a damaged PCM. Solution is to reflash the PCM after confirming that no performance products are installed.

 

I'm totally bone stock, so it wouldn't be caused by any aftermarket products. Is it safe to drive like this? I've got a trip coming up this weekend, about 100 miles round trip towing 6500 lbs. I won't have a chance to get it into the dealer beforehand.

Am I going to damage anything by driving it like this?

Of course this would happen at the worst possible time.

Oops, I looked up code 0604. 0607 is a PCM CPU internal error, not RAM. Same possible causes and fix as 0604. Well, you really don't want your PCM CPU crapping out on you while on a long trip. If you get it into the dealer I'm guessing they'll reflash. If it still pops the code they'll replace the whole PCM.

Proabably bad pcm. I think the warranty on pcm's may be 80k miles. Hopefully your below that.

 

Dealership just reflashed it. Picking it up tomorrow, hopefully it's all better now. While it was in there I had the spark plugs changed (3 broke), all the fluids flushed and changed (transmission, transfer case, brake, coolant and both diffs), and passenger side exhaust manifold replaced (warped and ticking). Costing an arm and both legs...

 

BTW, don't ever buy an aftermarket warranty - I bought the "Platinum" one, cost around $2200, and I might as well use it for toilet paper. Supposedly bumper-to-bumper until you read the fine print. Doesn't cover anything related to emissions (that means the PCM and every sensor in the system), doesn't cover anything exhaust related (so SOL on the warped manifold), plus a long laundry list of other things, like throttle body, etc. So basically it covers all the non-essential stuff like power windows, but not anything important, like the stuff that makes the truck actually go.

Mine is getting canceled when I go back to the dealership tomorrow, and at least I can get about 1/3 of my money back. Better than nothing. And I will talk anyone I can out of ever buying one (already got one friend to cancel his with the same warranty company)...

 

That's why I purchased a Ford PremiumCare ESP. No hassles. I took mine in for a metallic noise in the trans bellhousing (kinda sounded like a small Florida lizard caught in an home A/C condenser fan). I could re-produce the noise everytime I started it and whenever I rev'ed the engine. I got to the dealer turned off the truck to go check in, went back and started the truck from them to hear it. And guess what, NO noise!

They kept the truck 3 days, had everyone and their brother drive it. Started it multiple times, check the trans fluid, the PCM for codes, verified it had the most current firmware.

And since I had the PremiumCare, they rented my a car.

When I got it back 3 days later, they did not charge me for anything! Not even the $100.00 deductable. But, of course, they could not duplicate the noise. I just hate CND problems. But at least I did not pay for any of it.

I'll never buy anything except a Ford extended warranty. It's worth every penny.

 

My F250 SD with 6.4L auto trans is a 2008 model with just over 50,000 miles. It is typically only driven once a week and sometimes less often. Due to an injury it sat unused for over 3 months. I noticed that the cruise control was becoming intermittent prior to the injury. The first time I drove it after a 3 month lay-off the P0607 showed up while at idle sitting in a parking lot. Got a code reader, looked up the code and found the basic issue of the PCU not keeping up with the data flow type message. Prior to going to the dealership I pulled the air cleaner and dipstick out, removed the two cables from the PCU, used alcohol to clean the pin contacts for each side of each connector, then reinserted the connectors several times to burnish the contacts, replaced the air filter, and restarted the engine after resetting the code. The code did not return, the cruise control came back working solid. The fuel mileage was poor so I ran a can of concentrated diesel fuel system cleaner through it and the MPGs rose back up to normal plus a little better. So for $20.00 for the code reader and $12.00 for the fuel cleaner the problem is solved. Best to you, Barry
