My buddy is willing to give me a good deal on the Merc. But not sure I could use it as a donor for my 53. Does anyone know if that is a good platform to get the engine, steering/front end, rear axle, etc? or should I be looking at different range of years for the donor?
1979/82 LTD (name changed to Crown Victoria in 1983); 1979/2002 Grand Marquis; 1983/2002 Crown Victoria have worm and roller P/S

2003/2010 Grand Marquis; 2003/2011 Crown Victoria have rack & pinion steering.

1983/86: Ford offered a mid-sized LTD and Marquis, these basically restyled 1978/83 Fairmont/Zephyr and are unit (Fox) bodied.

Vin man I am with you on that . I sold a 55 f-100 that was in pieces cab in one corner frame in another so on and so forth. 8.8 rear m11 front custom cross member rust all taken care of in cab and doors but I just got tired of looking at it like that and the end seemed so far away. Anyway I ran across another 55 and I can drive it so I am doing work to I that won't take a year. I have been driving it and am getting ready to put new springs and steering in it in a couple weeks. And drive it some more.

so far so good

Vin Man, I just had the suspension and drive train from a 2009 Grand Marquis put in my wife's 53 F100 and so far so good. Very happy with the swap. Few electrical issues to work out but truck drives awesome and 4.6L engine is great.

Sounds great. From what I understand, using the 2009 allows for bolt in instead of grafting of the front clip. Much more realistic way for me to go if I end up going the donor car route.

Thanks.

Similar approach for me. Get it going, then build it up in small steps.

The plan I am feeling good about is getting it running and stopping now, then upgrade sections as time goes by. For example, put in a new motor, install aftermarket Mustang II, etc. This way, I see results after 1 "project" as opposed to having to completely disassemble the truck and not have anything usuable for a long time. Seeing a bunch of pieces spread out all over the place is more likely to lead me to giving up as opposed to seeing a truck say, without the engine in it.

Donor cars will always be available. This one nice because I know the history, but not a show-stopper at all.

Thanks again for the advice - truly appreciate.

No problem.

If I were in your shoes I would make a want/need list.

You will start to see that some of these products cant really be done one at a time.

For instance, you keep the stock suspension and decide you are going to put a different engine in. Well now you need to cut/weld motor mounts etc. Then you want to do a MII IFS and find out (after you remove your stock suspension) that your exhaust or something is in the way of the steering linkage and you have to re-redo the engine mounts.

In all honesty, its best to figure out what your final plan is and then figure out what things need to be swapped for each "bullet point" on that list. Some things you can do one at a time. Sheet metal or interior or sound system etc can usually be done one at a time.

Engine/trans/front suspension/rear suspension/driveshaft/motor mounts/trans crossmember/brakes kind of all need to be done at the same time to avoid doing things twice (and spending more money)
