question about transmission fitment.

Would an E40D transmission work in a 1997 F350?

The automatic behind the 7.3 in our trucks is an E40D...

Well, it's this one. It's connected to a powerstroke from a 99 f250 powerstroke

7.3L Powerstroke

That's not an E4OD, it is a 4R100. It will bolt up and work in a '97, but there could be problems.

If it is an early '99 it will work fine. If it is a later '99 then it's going to have very harsh torque converter lockup. You'd need to change the solenoid body and the pump to get it to work correctly.

I'm just looking at it, because it's 500 bucks, and that includes an entire engine to strip for parts.

I think I'll go look at it, record the numbers, and post them here. Then perhaps with help from the GroupMind, we can figure out if it'll fit.

E40D/4r100 are commonly confused. Mark here is our resident trans expert for clarification though .

$500 for a motor and trans is a good deal, especially when the motor comes with everything.

I would say that is a hell of a deal and grab it on normal principles...worst case you could start parting the engine out and recover probably double the cost.

that was my thought as well, it's only got 140K on it.

the #6 bore is scored, might look into fixing that, or parting it out. I've got two 7.3L trucks, having a parts motor might not be a bad idea.

I would buy that in a heartbeat. The 4r100 has some stronger internals and is easily converted to e4od. The engine is a bonus.

I'd be shocked if it weren't long gone. $500 price + posted a month ago + "need gone" == he sold it quick, and doesn't give a rat's about deleting the ad.

UPDATE -

So the truck went to the tranny repair place today.

Dropping the pan was a crap-show. Black goo, and the magnet had crap on it the consistancy of beach sand.

So a rebuild is in order.
