High Endurance Coast Guard Cutters

378-Foot High Endurance Cutter Class Index

My final tour of duty from 2002-2004 was serving aboard USCGC Hamilton (WHEC-715). She was one of two cutters moored at Naval Station San Diego. The other was CGC Chase.

These boats were 378' in length. They were a pretty fast boat with incredible sea keeping abilities.

During my tour, we did a Hawaii Patrol, HIPAT, Alaska fisheries patrol and two Southern counter narcotics patrols. The Alaska patrol took us well into the Bering Sea in Dec, Jan and Feb during the crab season. (think of the deadliest catch).

The South patrols took us as far South as the equator where we landed a major bust that was considered huge for the time.

Enjoy the read, I enjoyed the ride.

Hmm, 2 ft. longer than a Fletcher Class DD of WWII. What was the crew size of her compared to the 273 of a Fletcher?

Not sure of the crew compliment of the Fletchers but the 378's had about 20 officers and about 140 enlisted.

However, the WWII era vessels were armed to the teeth and much less was automated which required more physical watch standing. Likewise, damage control techniques were much different then and to be more specific, damage control changed a hell of a lot since the USS Stark incident in the very early 80's.
