Dixie, the PCM compensates for the lack of the SPOUT, you remove it with the engine off so the PCM acts like it's in place still, otherwise it will try to correct the timing to the previous value.

I disagree with that theory.

That was my understanding of what was explained to me when I was told the procedure, but I know you're way more knowledgeable when it comes to the electrics/electronics of these trucks, please explain.

Just food for thought:

When applying the dielectric grease (silicone) to the boot, I believe it should coat the entire inside of the boot, all the way up to where the wire connects to the plug.

I know your issue was apparently excessive heat from bad timing, but the coating on non conductive grease would have helped eliminate arcing to the block if that had been the problem.

Glad you got it figured out!

The SPOUT signal comes from the computer to "bias" the TFI trigger timing. TFI is also referred to as the Ignition Control Module (ICM). This is how the computer controls the timing based on sensor input. With the SPOUT removed the TFI will trigger on the raw PIP signal.

By removing the SPOUT signal path there is no way the computer can bias the timing. It really makes no difference to remove or install the SPOUT with the engine off versus engine running.

That's what I thought. Just making sure the ICM wasn't smarter than I figured it was.

Very unusual. Something I've never heard of. However something is definetly shorting out or overloading and in the same plug wires, wow.
Let us know if or when you find out.
Type the problem into google search and see if anything comes up, you would be surprised.
