My first Ford F6 1948

Just picked up my new, well new to me, 1948 Ford F-6 truck. I had a 1950 Dodge (I know) truck close to 20 years ago. I'm not an expert by any means. I looking for some guidance (props to harleymsn). I'm in need of getting it running. I've been told by the seller it has a rebuilt engine, a new/rebuilt carbonator, the transmission might have been rebuilt, the body looks great. The bed is flat and wood. The tires look like a mess, the brakes don't seem to be working, except for the parking brake, the clutch I was told was in need of a "fork Adjustment" the clutch peddle goes to the floor, so does the brake. I was told it was converted to 12v.
I'd love to find a shop or traveling mechanic to get this running safely on the road. I'm in Milton, GA. I hope I can post pictures (but don't seem to be able to yet on this forum???), and I owe one more pic of the dash (when I can post) since their are switches for high/low gear selection?

And to beat all, no keys were provided. And there is a strange switch on the steering column.

I just joined as premium since I don't mind paying for a good forum.
Thanx!

Great looking truck. I just picked up a 48 f5, although yours is in much better shape. Wheels will be high on the priority replacement list. I'm looking for a set to replace my dangerous "widow makers". Good luck and keep us posted! Looks to have a 2spd rear....very cool!

you do the same. I've been reading about changing those out with a few options of choices. If you find some, let me know, thanx.

Do you have the f6 emblems? I don't know of anyone repoping them, so they may be hard to find. Thanks for posting pics. I guess I will have to do the same now lol!

I have some boxes of parts to go through. Do you have a pic of what they look like?

Very nice looking truck. Brakes are fairly easy to do but the biggest hurtle with these big trucks are the WM wheels. Looks to me like you have multi-part wheels but not the dreaded WMs. Looks like there isn't the thick band on the concave side of the rims and on the picture of the front wheel it looks like a snap ring type set up. If they are the type with outer snap rings truck shops will still service them.

Agree. We can see enough of each to know that none are widow maker RH-5°s. I'd say you owe some prior owner a big attaboy for replacing the original wheels. Looks to me like they might be the older style solid/continuous ring Firestone RH type. Not all shops work on them anymore either, but most do. When you get new tires the shop will still inspect for rust or other damage, but you seem to be home free. Nice truck. Stu

Welcome!

It does appear that the carb has been refreshed - at least cosmetically - and the head bolts have been replaced. Usually signs of real work having been done on them. Hard to tell about the electrical - didn't get a good look of the generator/alternator or the battery rating. If you need to replace the radiator cap, be certain to watch the rating - yours should be a 4 pound version.

On the brakes. It appears that the lines have been refreshed. I would check the fluid level in the master cylinder - under the floor by the driver's right foot there is an access disk. This should be a booster system that has other components that may be at issue if the fluid is ok.

The biguns' are a special challenge - they do have their own honest style. Thanks for sharing.

panel switches?

Thanx for all the great input. That's a big relief that the tires were changed! I'll add some more pic. Here's one of the instrumentation cluster, there are so many *****??? What is the switch under the dash and on the column?
