Turn Signal Switch Replacement ’79 Ranger, Auto, Tilt Wheel, with Cruise Control

Not sure if anyone has done a walkthrough on this yet or not. I was doing mine last night so I though I do a write up.

The top locking tab was broke off my switch so I ordered another for cheap. It was like $8 shipping included and it took me all of about an hour to complete.

Step 1.

Remove 2 phillips head screws from back of either side of steering wheel to remove the horn/cruise pad. The pad pulls straight out and allows you to easily access the horn and cruise wires if you have them, they just pull out with your fingers. Remove the nut from the steering shaft with a 13/16” socket. Next, use a puller to remove the steering wheel from the splined shaft. There are 2 threaded bolts holes either side of the shaft, almost like they are there for a purpose . Don’t beat on or pry it off. You will fail miserably and be out a more than a blinker switch.

Step 2.
This is what you should see now:
Next, remove the turn signal handle (just screws out) and the 2 phillips head screws above and below the steering shaft. DO NOT remove the screw on the switch rocker yet, it will make your life much easier if you till the next step to do that.

Step 3.
At the bottom of the column housing, there is a cover that screws to the dash. It is held in place with 4 screws, 2 you can see from the driver’s seat and to go up into the bottom of the dash. Remove all 4 for access to the wire bundle.

Step 4.
Now you can pull the turn signal switch assembly out the top by pushing the wire bundle up from the bottom and gently lifting the hazards switch. Should be able to clear the steering shaft at the top to allow easy access to for the next step.

Step 5.
This step is optional but I did it to gain access to the tilt column so I could clean it up and tighten up the tilt pins. With the switch assembly out of the way to the left, you can now see the 4 phillips screws that hold the tilt collar in place. Remove the screws and pull the collar up while feeding the switch assembly.

Step 6.
Now you can remove the screw (the one in the middle of the switchrocker) I told you to wait on before. The reason for the wait was so the signal handle base would come out with the signal switch assembly.
With the screw securing the rocker removed, cut the 2 wires as clothes to the rocker as possible (that way you have some room for error down the road). Pull the 2 wires through the back of the assembly make sure to keep track of which one go where or left will be right and vice versa.

Step 7.
After cleaning up the area behind the rocker (careful not to lose those 2 metal strips as indicated) it’s time for reassembly. Place the signal handle base through the back of the assembly, then put the new rocker in place on the front and secure it with the screw we waited to remove. Run the wires from the new rocker through the hole, below the screw, out the back of the assembly.

Step 8.
Splice the wires as appropriate. The kit I bought came with butt connectors so I just used those. I would recommend soldering and heat wrapping. Secure the wires in the bundle on the backside of the assembly.

Step 9.
Now we are ready to test it out. You don’t have to put it all together for a test, just put the assembly in place (make sure the backside of the signal handle base fits securely into its hole, a little dab of grease will keep it operating smoothly too).Secure the entire assembly with the 2 phillips heads screws above and below the steering shaft and try it out. If all is good, take those 2 screws back out, slide the tilt collar back on and reassemble everything.

With any luck, you should be crackin a beer in celebration in about an hour!

Is it a rivet or a clip that snaps over? With a new switch assembly running $60 to $100 you can't go wrong trying to either drill out the rivet and replace it with a screw or snap it back in. Picture?

It looks like someone already replaced my stock one with a whole new switch assembly. The cam is riveted on and there is a bundle of splices under the dash. Looks like I will need to replace the entire assembly.
