Head Unit Upgrades.

Hi,

The Ex I'm due to pick up this week has an aftermarket double DIN radio fitted that is frankly rubbish. The sensible part of me says to source a Ford OEM head unit that is compatible for a 2001 Excursion. The other part of me says to get reasonably priced Double DIN unit that I could use for navigation/buck up camera/watching DVDs on etc.

What does the Collective seem to favour? I'm no Donald Trump so when I say reasonably priced, I mean it.

Many thanks in advance.

Nick.

I've got a pioneer 4700 I've got to put in mine along with a back up camera

There's no point in doing a stock radio when you can do so much more with an aftermarket unit

What back up camera are you guys using? I'm looking at doing a new head unit with a back up camera as well. Seem's like the "easiest" is one of the license plate ones, then splice in the power with the reverse back up light.

I'm considering one of these if I don't get a new head unit. Clips into the existing rear view mirror and doesn't need a wire running the length of the vehicle.

I've got a $15 fleabay special camera with infrared. I have it powered to an ignition on source in back so I can flip t on going down the road. It's real nice when you are pulling the car trailer and you want to look underneath the load at the straps.

Is there a Ford head unit with Nav that will drop into our dashboards?

Drop in?, No. The wiring would have to be worked quite a bit and the matter of the oem antennas, VSS and such.

Looks JUST like my unit. Pioneer X930BT. I use the blue tooth with my Android phone; works flawlessly. I like the unit A LOT!!!

Not sure what your budget is but if you have Smartphone and want a nice double din head unit look at the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. You can use Apple Carplay or Android Auto for your Navigation as well as everything else.

I have that units older brother, the AVH-4000NEX and have been very happy with it. The only difference is that the 4100 does both Android and iOS while the 4000 only does iOS.

I went with a low end option to get Bluetooth, SXM, etc. Good unit for the price. Kenwood DPX301U. Also got the interface to keep steering wheel controls from Crutchfield. That is a cool device.

I was in Matts rig a few months back and his system sounded simply awesome. When he saw the look on my face he informed me that the door speakers were all stock and that only the head unit had been swapped... the OEM is trash.
